Situation Update No. 3
On 10.02.2010 at 14:58 GMT+2

New Hampshire's governor is calling for an investigation into the discovery of a radioactive leak at the Vermont Yankee nuclear plant. Vermont officials believe the volume and direction of flow of tritium-tainted groundwater leads to the conclusion that it's reaching the Connecticut River, which runs along the two states. Health officials believe the impact to public health would be minimal. Gov. John Lynch told WMUR-TV he and other state leaders were told by the plant's owner, Entergy, that no contaminated water passed through underground pipes at the facility. But Lynch said seven months before the discovery, a Vermont Yankee official said no radioactive substances passed through those pipes. He's requesting the Nuclear Regulatory Commission investigate the events leading up to and after the leak was identified.

2. Golly, why is everyone so suspicious?
The ownership at Vermont Yankee has been the very soul of open and honest throughout the reactor's term of service. I mean, if the owner of the plant says that no contaminated water passed through the underground pipes at the facility, we can trust that, right? Okay, there was that spot of unpleasantness when the owners testified that there were no underground pipes at the facility, but can you really call that a lie?
