Contractor in Iraq gets 9 years in prison

Mon Jan 29, 5:04 PM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A former Defense Department contractor was sentenced on Monday to nine years in prison and ordered to forfeit $3.6 million for his role in a bribery and fraud scheme involving contracts to reconstruct Iraq, U.S. officials said.

U.S. Justice Department officials said Robert Stein, 52, of Fayetteville, North Carolina, also was sentenced to three years of probation after his release from prison.

Stein, the comptroller and funding officer for the Coalition Provisional Authority - South Central Region in 2003 and 2004, pleaded guilty a year ago to various criminal charges, including bribery, money laundering and conspiracy.

He admitted he conspired, along with others, including several U.S. Army officers, to rig bids to steer contracts to a certain contractor.

2. Well, look at the bright side
he'll have medical coverage in jail and then have only four years to go before he can qualify for Medicare.

5. Do you think that this kind of profiteering extends beyond the money
and goods that change hands into networking for civilian jobs, for the individuals involved and for their extended families, not only in contracting organizations, but also in companies directly and indirectly related to them?

I know all of that sounds pretty speculative, but one wonders about some jobs you see on job boards for extended periods of time. I don't know how someone would go about investigating this, but it does seem as though some jobs you see aren't really there.

6. How many more do you think we'll see?
Is this just a token conviction, or are we finally tightening down on this corruption in Iraq?
