There are people who are sitting in jail right now that can't afford 150 bucks for bail. They will miss out on a chance to get out of jail on bail and help their defence, so as a result, they will end up doing far more time than they could have if they only had 150 bucks in the first place.

I know a father who has been unemployed for two years (not for lack of trying) whose former wife had an arrest warrant issued for him recently cuz he got behind in alimony and child support. (She makes nearly six figures, and the children are not lacking anything so that's not an issue.) Many fathers are jailed for this debt which they have no ability to pay.

People get homeless behind this stuff. Their lives are ruined.

About a year ago I was pulled over for a traffic stop and the cop told me I owed child support and had a suspended licence. (I do not, never have, and the mistake was cleared up the very next day. Both of my girls are grown, one in college, and I always paid, and continue to pay my way with them as it should be.)

Long story short, he had my car towed, it cost me 1200.00 and the very next day I had a letter from the DA and DMV stating that I neither owed child support or had a suspended licence. No matter, I still paid the money.

The judge, when she dismissed the speeding ticket, told me I could get a lawyer to get my money back. Yeah, right, for 1200.00 a lawyer is going to take my case.

My point is I have a house no one can take, but a lot of people get fucked for life because of this stuff.

Only rich people think there is no such thing as debtors prison.
