I think that, right after the conference championships, the opening line at World Sports Exchange was Colts minus 5.5. Sometime thereafter, it moved to minus 6. I stopped watching it several days before the game, but no way could it have gone to minus 14.

Sports betting decoded: If the line is Colts minus 6, that means that, if you bet on the Saints, you win if the Saints win the game or if they lose by fewer than 6 points. The Colts bettors win only if the Colts win by more than 6. If the Colts win by precisely 6, no one wins or loses and all bets are returned.

Thus, if you see a point spread line, the team that's "minus" some number is the favorite. A team that's minus 1 is a slight favorite; a team that's minus 14 (two touchdowns) is a huge favorite.

I would explain the money line, while I'm at it, except that I have to get back to reading threads about Sarah Palin.
