the blizzard and the bald eagles
Edited on Sat Feb-06-10 05:06 AM by shireen
There's a camera set up overlooking a bald eagle nest at the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge in Maryland. I've been checking in on the eagles, who are incubating a pair of eggs. It's very interesting to see how they're coping with this snow storm. When i started monitoring the nest on Friday evening, the nest was starting to fill with snow. And I've watched with dismay over the night as the snow filled the nest.

I don't know if it's mom or dad on duty since they take turns and look alike. But it's really amazing to watch their dedication under such harsh conditions.

Nature happens, but i can't help but anthropomorphize what's going on -- i really admire those eagles and other wild animals that are braving this storm.

Edited to add: there's no light shining on the nest at night. It's an infrared camera.

1. K&R. Fascinating, and thanks for posting...
I worry about the animals, too. We have a bird feeder, and I also adopted a little quail one winter. We got special food for him, put out a bulb to keep him warmer and he even got so he'd come up on the porch. :-)

2. My city is on the Mississippi River and I live a block from a small river that empties into it
and in the early Spring I can see dozens of bald eagles on the ice and flying around. They are after the fish, but it's fun to watch one buzz the gulls that are congregated on the ice and watch them all take off screaming. Then at about the time when they all get settled back onto the ice the eagle returns from down the river and scatters them again.

3. I always worry about the animals in bad weather and hope the eagles make it.
Some would say I should worry about something more important but that is just the way I am. A year ago my garage was a home to little pine squirrels. I fed them, left bedding out for them and in May there were eight babies running around in my garage. The only damage they did was open a bag of mulch. Soon they were gone. This fall a couple moved in again and we have continued to care for them.

5. Bald eagles thrive in Maine and Alaska.
Snow isn't a big problem for them.
