Meet the New Boss: Obama Nominates Extremist to Head DEA
by scimitar:
Today, in a shocking move, President Obama officially nominated Michele Leonhart to head the Drug Enforcement Administration. And yes - it's the SAME Michele Leonhart who served as the agency's leader during the Bush Administration.

Anyone who opposes the massive waste of our taxpayer dollars on the War on Drugs should be absolutely enraged by this decision. Progressives must immediately work to remove Michele Leonhart and the rest of the Bush-era lackeys at America's most wasteful and blatantly anti-democratic institution.

While I supported candidate Obama and campaigned vigorously for him, his actions regarding our nation's disastrous, failed War on Drugs have been, at their very best, a disappointment, and at their worst, an abomination.

128. Still trying to be Mr. Bipartisan?
You'd think he'd know better by now. All his "giving" to the GOP has resulted in absolutely no "take" on his part. Maybe he still hasn't learned that there's no compromising with the GOP. Either that, or he's on the same page with the GOP, and that thought makes my brain recoil in horror.

I can't explain a lot of what he's doing. I wish he'd explain, but that promised "transparency" is slightly opaque.

88. I agree, Rocky
The excuses have run out. If this president is truly an ethical leader, how in the name of all sanity can he justify surrounding himself with so many of Bush's cohorts? The emperor has no clothes, and people better wake the hell up and see the writing on the wall. How many of us here a year and a half ago would have envisioned a Democratic presidency replete with accomplices from arguably the most evil and corrupt presidential administration ever? No more excuses from the Obama supporters. This crap is wrong and must stop.

"...a cultivation permit to the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, further impeding research into the medical uses of cannabis."

You know, its a strange thing but there are DUer's, right here at DU, that feel cannabis is an alternative therapy with already discredited homeopathic leanings & associations and so not medically or scientifically justifiable - not pure, so...

Homeopathy and medical marijuana aren't even remotely similar.
The presence of a known active ingredient makes a big difference.

But then I've learned that someone on here is willing to support absolutely *anything*, no matter how strange it may be.

89. Makes sense, homeopathy is quite the buzz saw of a buzz-word it would seem...
It is possible, however, to travel away from the "alternative therapy" component I mentioned simply because it is there. But I am not the one that has been agressive at the legislative level to see that that distinction remains as vibrant as it is today, nor am I the one that wid-wifed the entity we indentify as BigPharma into the world

I do share your concern with respect to homeopathy, and I am quite sure I would not be splashing "sugar water woo-woo bullshit" into the face of either myself, a loved one, a friend nor holding out hope for the sake of hope into the face of a stranger recently diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumor *or* a broken heart - so that's a given

With respect to your feelings regarding homeopahty: I feel much the same way as to early, accepted, scientific-for-their-time 'medical procedures' such as: blood letting, leeches and having to endure 5 high colonics a day - so as to suggest with whatever light humor remains on the topic - to persuade my shit to look prettier, but hey!

Time marches on or at least that's what they say which reminds me ~

Its off to the saloon, at least I can still choose a toxin or two for myself ;) Have a lovely evening :kick:

114. Tell that to one of my dear friends with luekemia...
diagnosed with less than a year to live who turned to Homeopathy.

12 years later she was the minister at my wedding.

It is now 22 years and she is still up and running strong. You can tell there is something wrong with her throat area but thats the only place..not bad for being given up to die by the main stream medical.

Tell that to me, our children and grandchildren of my dearly departed husband.

Sent home to die and given up on with less than five months to live and so I went all natural and herbal.

He lived another nine years...meet two new grand babies and gained weight (he was down to 98 lbs when they sent him home to die)....and he did not pass away from what he was sent home to die from (copd), but rather from a massive heart attack when he went in for a safety check when he had a cold.

I still thank The Creator for those years as they were happy years and I wouldn't trade those memories for anything.

They said the blood thinners they gave him because he had had a stroke years ago probably made his heart work overtime.

You need to do a bit more research before you give up on alternative healing.

117. "alternative healing" can mean a lot of things.
Edited on Sat Feb-06-10 01:35 AM by Warren DeMontague
If you're talking about substances diluted with water to the point where no molecule of the original thing exists in the solution, no, I'm sorry, but you're talking about unscientific woo-woo gibberish.

If something worked for someone, or someone thinks something worked for them, bravo and wonderful. People live, people die, people with cancer go into remission, lots of times there is no clear explanation.

That does not mean, however, that diluting a substance 10,000,000 times with water, until not a single molecule of anything BUT water remains, means that substance is magically anything BUT ...again, water.

Now, as for cannabis, there is a clear, scientific and logical pathway via which it clearly affects the human body and nervous system. If you want to call things like cannabis or acupuncture or thai massage or herbal remedies "alternative medicine" that's one thing, but you're doing all of them a gross disservice by lumping them in with homeopathy, which is (again) 100% pure bullshit, or maybe bullshit that has been diluted with water enough times to be 100% pure water imbued-with-the-magical-properties-of-bullshit.

I used to smoke a lot of pot, and I never knew a pothead who would claim that an empty rolling paper that once sat next to a bag of pot would get him just as high as a joint would.

In fact, for someone like that I would strongly suggest they stop smoking the dope for a while.

17. what a stupid move. this is an appt that is against the tide of history
but not shocking at all from the Obama administration, sadly.

California is going to legalize cannabis. If not this year, then the next or the next. Truth will out over propaganda. At least five states already have cannabis use laws on their books and others are watching the progress of these moves.

If this guy uses federal agents to go after people who are cooperating with state law, Obama is setting up a major split in the democratic party - considering all his actions, more and more liberals are going to find libertarians share their beliefs while the incorporated democrats look more and more like the party of coporate interests, just like their Republican brethren.

I'm not sure if the democrats who reside in the beltway realize how much they are alienating people who will vote third party as Obama's words and actions continue to indicate his views... which, honestly, seem to be politically motivated more than anything else (i.e. not letting the idiot repubes try to paint him as soft on drugs, etc.

but the truth is that those are the same sorts that are out there railing against evolution, too, so they're the wrong group to placate.

147. It would be shocking if Obama nominated a liberal for anything
just wanted to repeat what you said in the subject line.

if the democrats developed a plan to encourage people to leave the party and form a third one, this would surely be part of their tactics.

the dems continue to fellate the right wingers in hopes they'll really like them someday.

anyway, I'm not agitating to form a third party, but if/when this does happen, democrats better not act all surprised and hurt because they'll have brought it on themselves.

27. Anti-Medical Marijuana Michele Leonhart to Remain DEA Head
Opinion by Marijuana Policy Project
(January 27, 2010) in Society / Drug Law

By Ben Morris

As expected, President Obama has nominated acting head of the DEA Michele Leonhart to take the post on permanently. We have been generally happy with the Justice Department during Obamas freshman year, but it would be nice to see a new face at DEA. Heres why.

Early in Leonharts career, she was the Special Agent in Charge of the Los Angeles Field Division, where she oversaw President George W. Bushs brutal tactic of raiding and arresting medical marijuana patients. Most readers will remember the raids on dispensaries that remained a part of the former presidents war on drugs until 2009, but during the early years of the Bush administration, these raids were directed at individual patients, not just distributors. The raids were intended to send a political message and undermine emerging medical marijuana laws. Bush was smitten with Leonharts work fighting innocent cancer patients, and in 2003, he promoted her to deputy director.

In that role, Leonhart rejected the application of Professor Lyle Craker of the University of Massachusetts-Amherst to research marijuanas medical value. Professor Craker was proposing the kind of project considered essential if marijuana is ever to be licensed by the FDA as a prescription medicine, and a DEA administrative law judge ruled in Crakers favor. Leonhart, however, ignored the judges ruling and denied Crakers application. Her reasons were transparently phony: an ideological opposition to medical marijuana dressed up in pseudoscientific language. This is precisely the sort of nonsense Obama has pledged to end.

At a news conference in April, Michele Leonhart said that legalizing drugs would be a failed law enforcement strategy for both the U.S. and Mexico.

been thinking of the song "Show Me" from My Fair Lady

Words!
Words! Words! I'm so sick of words!
I get words all day through;
First from him, now from you! Is that all you blighters can do?
Don't talk of stars Burning above; If you're in love,
Show me! Tell me no dreams
Filled with desire. If you're on fire,
Show me! Here we are together in the middle of the night!
Don't talk of spring! Just hold me tight!
Anyone who's ever been in love'll tell you that
This is no time for a chat! Haven't your lips
Longed for my touch? Don't say how much,
Show me! Show me! Don't talk of love lasting through time.
Make me no undying vow. Show me now!
Sing me no song! Read me no rhyme!
Don't waste my time, Show me!
Don't talk of June, Don't talk of fall!
Don't talk at all! Show me!
Never do I ever want to hear another word.
There isn't one I haven't heard.
Here we are together in what ought to be a dream;
Say one more word and I'll scream!
Haven't your arms Hungered for mine?
Please don't "expl'ine," Show me! Show me!
Don't wait until wrinkles and lines
Pop out all over my brow,
Show me now!

Edited on Fri Feb-05-10 03:35 PM by Romulox
This, the former editor of Harvard Law Review claimed he didn't know what "decriminalization" meant when he voiced support for it.

Just like he didn't know what "I support reforming NAFTA" meant before the Ohio primary, and then learned (and therefore retracted his statement as "heated campaign rhetoric") only days later...

I was hoping that BHO would bring an intelligent and humane perspective to drug policy in our nation. Sadly, he's just rubber-stamped the same corporate-prison $$$-scam that has plagued our nation for decades. When I think of how disproportionatelly hard the system hits the African American community, I want to scream... how in the hell does Obama not see this and feel compelled to change it?

My friends and I will be supporting a progressive candidate if we can find one. We THOUGHT we had one the last time.
And if that one lets us down, we will try, try again.

I don't see how any self-respecting liberal can be happy having a third bush term in full flower. We are still in Iraq, we have escalated in Afghanistan, Gitmo remains open, health care reform is circling the drain, GLBTers remain second-class citizens, and he has packed his administration with bush appointees.

You're OK with all of this?

I think he would have been better if he had ran as a republican--I mean his choices, most part, have been dismal. He didn't clean out the CIA, after * cleaned it out and put in loyalists--he didn't significantly change out the justice department, and he didn't re-install any of the generals who went against *'s war hard on and stepped down. He's using retreads, so where in the hell does the change come in to play?

125. It's ok. When President Walmart wins in 2012,
everyone will have one finger up their ass trying to figure out what happened.

116. At this rate...we all need to practice saying...
"Madam President Sarah Palin" because Obama is handing it to her on a silver platter at this rate.
What has changed from the Bush administration? Only the names of the President and Vice President....and thats about it.

145. Ok, we get it...
you're in love with President Obama, but he already has Michelle. Maybe if you thought of him more as your President and not your boyfriend, it would anger you as well.

Yes, he's incredibly good-looking, intelligent, and accomplished. And I can relate to that - I was "in love" with him, too! But, I cannot ignore what he has done and who he has appointed since taking office. The only way I can tell Bush actually left is by the pretty words coming out of Obama's mouth.

He can redeem himself with me, but it's going to take a HELL of a lot of changes between now and 2012.

165. He's trying so hard he went straight to his second term.
He should have went exterme left in his first term and make the right woo him to the moderate middle in his second term. But he wanted to do his second term now and he wonders why he's a lame duck that can't get a damned thing done.
