BAGHDAD - Bombers struck an Iraqi army post northeast of Baghdad and civilian targets in the city as violence across Iraq killed at least 72 people Thursday, including the bullet-riddled bodies of 27 men dumped in the capital — apparent victims of sectarian death squads.

Still, the top American military spokesman insisted the U.S. command felt "very comfortable" that it is making "steady progress" in restoring order in Baghdad.

"We are seeing those initial signs of progress being made," Maj. Gen. William C. Caldwell told Associated Press Radio.

The violence came as the Democratic-controlled U.S. Senate adopted House-passed legislation calling for U.S. troops to begin leaving Iraq by Oct. 1. President Bush pledged to veto the measure, and neither body passed the measure with enough votes to override a veto.

Iraqi government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh said Oct. 1 was too soon for a withdrawal to start and criticized the Senate vote, saying it "sends wrong signals" to armed militants.

The deadliest attack occurred about 9 a.m. when a suicide car bomber killed 10 Iraqi soldiers at a checkpoint in Khalis, a longtime flashpoint city about 50 miles northeast of Baghdad. Ten other soldiers and five civilians were wounded, police said. ......(more)

It will such while we are there.

Regardless of the ending, it will suck. Georgie started this shit and it sucks. We need to rip the bandaid off. It will hurt for a while, but it will pass.

4. And how does he describe conditions NOW?
A walk in the park?

This is the same pitiful excuse that kept the Vietnam war going for six more years and cost tens of thousands more American deaths. "We can't leave, the place will become a bloodbath!"

That's what it was already. That's what Iraq is now.

We left Vietnam and it got better. We need to leave Iraq. We are not doing any substantial good there. We can't fix this thing. Greed and lies put us there and keep us there. GIGO.

5. K&R. I second that emotion. Lets get Hagel and show Joe the door!
Dress him down and send him to the locker room.

Amazing how these fools justify support for this war. It was ILLEGAL, a preemptive invasion.
The responsible people pointed this out but it wasn't a sexy issue and Judy Miller at the NYT
and the horror show crew at the Washington Post pushed the war like crazy.

I say impeach everybody in the administration who endorsed the war and give them a one way ticket
to Dubai or a trial before a federal judge for the same law used to convict the Watergate crew -
defrauding the US government (means you did such an awful job, you ripped off the government by
simply taking a salary;)
