Anti-government protesters to march against imaginary gun-grabbing liberals
Gun rights advocates, including some in the antigovernment Patriot movement for whom the specter of gun restrictions is a recurring theme, are planning to march in Washington, D.C., and some individual states on April 19.

Gun rights supporters assumed the worst even before Obama was elected. The National Rifle Association initiated a membership drive dubbed, “Prepare for the Storm in 2008.” In the months before and immediately after Obama’s election, firearms and ammunition sales soared in anticipation of new gun restrictions.

But...

Not only has the president made no effort to restrict gun ownership, he even signed legislation allowing guns in national parks and on Amtrak trains. . The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, which endorsed Obama in 2008, recently gave him a grade of “F” on every issue on which it scored him.

Obama could give every one of these guys an assault rifle, and they would still call him a gun-grabbing socialist.

4. Obama should do something shockingly pro-gun from way out of right-wing field.
Like declare a tax holiday for hunting ammunition, so hunters can afford to practice their love on animals and put food on their families.

5. So you would appease 18% of the gun owners
What about the other 82%?

6. Hunting is mostly irrelevant, and even Sarah Brady and John Rosenthal are ostensibly pro-hunting.
The issue for the last couple of decades has been primarily about guns used for defensive purposes and target shooting, not hunting. Personally, I think that Obama's choice to simply ignore the gun-ban zealots and their various bait-and-switches is one of the best things he could have possibly done.

If he wanted to do more, simply removing the DLC's ban-the-most-popular-guns language from the administration's various websites would be a good start; repealing the arcane and silly 18 USC 922(r) rules and expanding the BATFE's ridiculously narrow definition of "sporting purposes" (which excludes the most common sporting rifles) would also be nice. Honestly, though, I suspect he has a whole lot more on his mind, e.g. the economy, health care, and the Middle East.

7. I think poster point is
Obama could shoot a guy in the face and have them apologize to him for getting in the way of his bullets and the Pro-gun lobby would claim he is anti-gun and fixin' to steal their weapons. His actions have a total disconnect with their outrage. It's the reoccurring theme of the protests against the Obama administration.

8. I think it's worth pointing out...

that fewer than 0.1% of U.S. gun owners will likely be participating. I suppose at the local and state level, this could do some good, but on the other hand, I'd hate for the MSM to try to spin it as lack of support for gun-owner rights when most of us don't show up.

Would I show up at a protest if the DLC/Third Way "assault weapon" fraud looked like it was going somewhere? Sure. Am I going to this one? No. Obama appears to be vastly smarter about the gun issue than President Clinton was, and is pretty much ignoring the pro-new-bans contingent.

I notice from the list of speakers that the NRA doesn't appear to be backing this. It looks more like a GOA event.
