tea party
Would some kind person please explain to a hapless immigrant who has a great deal of difficulty in finding the logic (if any) behind american politics? I know what the original boston tea party was about but where are the similarities and why democrats as a rule so opposed to it? forgive my ignorance. thanks

1. Kicking to keep this visible because trust me, you want somebody other than
me to explain this to you! :hi:

5. No -- not at all. I was trying to be helpful and keep this visible until somebody
else came along and could answer your question. I'm not good at explaining things clearly -- plus, when I try to, I often learn from other DUers that my opinion is wrong and I haven't thought it through (and THAT'S not meant to be sarcastic, either).

Why would I want to be sarcastic at your expense?

But I'll tell you something, I think I've finally learned my lesson to just mind my own business instead of trying to be helpful.

7. No problem - I understand. It is really difficult to "hear"
someone's intent via the written word. I evenmisinterpret my best friend's posts sometimes.

Hope you got an answer that helped you understand. DU is the best place for learning stuff like that, IMO.

:hi:

3. It's partly that the present day "tea party" people are being misled, used by the right-wing.
If they were genuine they would have been having their tea party's all throughout the Bush years.

4. See, there's your trouble right there -- you're looking for logic
The only thing the present "tea party" movement has in common with the historical Tea Party is the name. trust me, you're not as hapless as you think you are.

8. This immigrant understands Nazis, right?
Well the Nazis used to idolize themselves as some sort of mythic Aryan race from a false past.

Well American nazis do the same thing with America's past.

Last time around they called themselves "militias" and "minutemen," after soldiers from the American revolution.

This time they call themselves "teabaggers" after the Boston Tea Party.

There. That's all there is to it.
