Connecting some dots:

Robert Flanagan's attorney said Flanagan works for the Pelican Institute. Full name of the organization is the Pelican Institute for Public Policy, a conservative libertarian nonprofit organization.

Steve Beatty, former assistant city editor of The Times-Picayune, was an investigative reporter for the Pelican Institute and wrote stories about ACORN in the aftermath of the James O'Keefe's pimp operation.

Beatty is now managing editor of the investigative journalism website called The Lens. Jed Horne, former Times-Picayune city editor, is editor of The Lens. This public information is available from Gambit, The Pelican Institute, and The Lens websites.

So Beatty now heads up the "investigative journalism" team at The Lens. His former employer, the Pelican Institute, is now tied to a plot to tamper with and wiretap the phones at Democratic Sen. Mary Landrieu's office in the Hale Boggs Federal Building.

If The Pelican Institute and The Lens seek to be a model for how to preserve investigative journalism in New Orleans, they are off to a dubious and felonious start.
