The World’s Ugliest Endangered Fish
Edited on Tue Jan-26-10 09:45 AM by Ian David
The World’s Ugliest Endangered Fish

It’s quite possibly the ugliest thing I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen a whole lot of ugly fish (and forced others to look at them, too). However, the blobfish is in his own category. Still, just because it’s a horridly ugly fish doesn’t mean it deserves to be fished to death, and right now poor little blobfish is at risk thanks to overfishing in Australia and New Zealand, where most of the blobfish make their watery home.

You know what the blobfish looks like? Ziggy! You know, the cartoon character that’s in every newspaper despite having not been funny for 20 years? The blobfish is quite obviously the inspiration for Ziggy, or at least a half-inflated balloon version of Ziggy. I think it’s the blobfish’s bulbous nose-like fold and overall rounded face that gives him the Ziggy-like appearance.

31. The greenish substance may be part of the fish
Some fish have a growth that acts as a lure--it wiggles the growth to attract prey then eats them when they get close enough. This might be what you're seeing here.

I heard one person say that they are never sold with the head on in fresh fish markets. If people saw how ugly they were, they wouldn't buy them.

23. I used to buy my fish from a wholesaler
and yeah, they thought I was nuts, tromping around the place in my boots and cleaning the fish myself, just so I could do West Lake Fish for a crowd.

I never saw a monkfish with the head on. They lop the heads off right there in the boat.

20. I'd call him unfortunate rather than ugly
and it's unfortunate in an endearingly sad sack sort of way. You'd want to pet him and tell him it's really not that bleak, although it really is.

Now this is an ugly fish:

And yes, it's endangered, too.

32. Here's yet another ugly fish...
Chaca catfish live in the Ganges River Basin. They're called this because of the distinctive cry they make when you lift one out of the water--they will sit there and yell "chaca! chaca! chaca!" There are a few catfish that will make sounds, and this is one of them. They live burrowed in leaf litter on the bottom of the river and prey on small bottom-feeding fishes, which they catch by creating a suction in the water with their gills.

Chacid fun: they are capable of dropping the pH of 100 gallons of water from 7 to 5 in a couple of hours. It's either a defensive mechanism (these fish do not move) or a byproduct of their bile.

43. Come to think of it...Chaca chaca is the perfect new mascot for the GOP
It lays on the bottom of the river and eats anything that comes near it by sucking it into its lungs.

It's toxic--chacids' skin exudes a toxin to protect it, and if you've got one of these things in your aquarium and feed it guppies the guppies will graze on it and die real quick.

If you step on one your foot swells up.

It never moves.

The evolutionary cycle ended approximately three million years ago for this fish.

It's ugly as shit.

And if you try moving it, it screams bloody murder.

44. That would be perfect
That or the sea cucumber. When threatened, it pukes up its entire
guts to scare off would be predators. It regenerates until the
next predator.

Given that the Republicans are cowards, they would likely puke up
their guts rather than fight, or even exude toxin.

Plus, it kind of looks like a dick.

Blobfish
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The blobfish (Psychrolutes marcidus)<1> is a fish that inhabits the deep waters off the coasts of the Australian mainland and Tasmania. It is sometimes known as a deep sea fish.<2> Due to the inaccessibility of its habitat, it is rarely seen by humans. However it turns up at moments of great importance, such as the God giving Moses the 14 Commandments, the resurrection, Mohammed first realizing inventing his own religion could be a good political tool, and when Kraft's took over Cadbury's. The blobfish's appearances at such events have caused many to set up a religion, with the blobfish as deity. The blobfish's representative here on earth is Mr Blobby.

According to a scientific survey, 92% of married men admitted they would leave their partners for a one night stand with a blobfish.
