Republican Outlines Plan to Seek Gillibrand’s Senate Seat

By NICHOLAS CONFESSORE
Published: January 20, 2010

ALBANY — Fresh off the upset victory of Scott Brown, the Republican contender in the Senate race in Massachusetts, Bruce A. Blakeman, a Republican lawyer from New York City, arrived here on Wednesday to discuss his plans to run against Senator Kirsten E. Gillibrand, the Democratic incumbent, this fall.

“You are angry? I will fight for you. You are worried? I will work to protect you. You are frustrated, and your voice will be heard,” said Mr. Blakeman, who wore a pinstripe suit and bore a box of doughnuts for the press corps.

Mr. Blakeman took questions on health care (like Mr. Brown, he is against the health care legislation being mulled in Congress), gay marriage (he is against it) and President Obama’s proposed tax on investment banker bonuses (against).

Asked what he would do for people who are worried about losing their health care coverage or do not have health insurance, Mr. Blakeman said he had no particular plan of his own but believed that Democrats in Washington were bent on “dismantling” a system that already worked reasonably well.

“Do we need to set up a clinic program? Perhaps we do,” he said. “Do we need to have catastrophic coverage? I think, by and large, we do. A lot of the people, unfortunately, that aren’t getting health care don’t have access to better health care.”

He also repeated a Republican mantra that the Senate and House plans — which would require Americans to buy insurance from private insurance companies, while offering subsidies to those who cannot afford the plans on their own — amounted to “having the government run” the health care system and telling “people what they can do and what they can’t do.”

Mr. Blakeman, 54, is no political novice. He was on the board of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and during the late 1990s was the presiding officer of the Nassau County Legislature. He ran for state comptroller in 1998 and briefly considered a bid for New York mayor.
