RANT WARNING: This photo doesn't inspire anger in me. It inspires white-hot motherf**king RAGE.
I lived through the 60s.

Black Panthers.

Malcom X.

Dr. Martin Luther King..."Free At Last. Free At Last. Thank God Almighty We Are Free At Last."

Not necessarily, Dr. King. We have the first African American president in U.S. history and a level of racism, at this point in our "journey," that shames me. And I've done my best, in my life, to not become that which I despise.

We have a fat-assed fucking racist piece of shit lying in Hawaii hospital bed while his racist followers clutch their rosary beads and pray for his fat ass, asserting that "the country needs you."

Not MY country, you inbred fucks, you "freepers," RimJob and your flock of banjo-playing "Deliverance" cousin-fuckers. You loser motherfuckers who COULDN'T WIN THE LAST PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION and responded by cutting eyeholes in your BEDSHEETS.

YOUR country. You RACIST FUCKING PIGS.

Fuck YOU, fuck your novenas for "El Rushbo." Shove that golden microphone as far up his fat ass as it will GO.

Stick another tube in his fat fucking ass and tell him he won't be getting any Jell-o tonight.

I don't like everyone. I won't lie to you. But that decision is never based on the color of their skin, their sexuality, their gender, or their religion.

Some people suck just because they suck, and some people rock just because they rock.

What kind of uncivilized motherless FUCK distributes this kind of racist SHIT and thinks it is an OK thing to do in 2009?

"The individual, who was not named, faces disciplinary action up to and including being fired."

That's not enough. The "73-year-old woman and registered Democrat" needs higher education. That's all I'm going to say. I spit in her 73-year-old fucking FACE.

DU hates the "B" word. Give me a substitute and I'll use it. Just make sure it's preceded by "Motherfucking Worthless (Blank)."

I am NOT including the photo in this post. Go to the Raw Story link below if you need to see it.

State employee investigated over inappropriate Obama-Palin image

By Stephen C. Webster
Thursday, December 31st, 2009 -- 6:56 pm

http://rawstory.com/2009/12/state-employee-investigated-inappropriate-obamapalin-image/

A Colorado Department of Transportation employee is under investigation for e-mailing an image of President Obama polishing former lawmaker Sarah Palin's shoes.

The individual, who was not named, faces disciplinary action up to and including being fired. The image was forwarded to four people, at least one of whom was outside the department, and it was quickly reported as "offensive."

"The original sender of the e-mail, who isnt a state employee, wrote 'It appears he (Obama) has found his niche,'" the Associated Press reported.

"It's certainly an inappropriate email to begin with, but its the fact too that it's being sent on state time and using state resources and for that we find that very unacceptable," a department spokeswoman told Colorado's NBC 9News.

One of the recipients of that disgusting picture was able to report it without repurcussions.

The scum that forwarded that disgusting picture may be out of a job. (A government job that, ironically, may also have been lost had the election gone their way and the economy totally collapsed.)

The object of ridicule in that picture was elected President. Couldn't have happened in Rosa Park's time.

You have a slew of supporters who share your outrage and disgust. :grouphug:

100. Drop the lame reverse discrimination shit. Plenty of critical remarks
have been made about President Obama - and I've made some of them - but they are not racist. The remarks are ordinary remarks made about the choices he's making in office. The kind of things you'd say to any color person, and they won't be considered racist by intelligent people.

If you think that is racist, and if you think that "one person ever says anything bad about any black person then nothing has changed", then you are racist.

Until you've experienced the SAME amount, quality and history of horrifying oppression, you have no ground to complain about reverse discrimination. It does not add up.

is a racist joke about a black president being relegated to menial tasks for a white woman the same thing as a reality that forces all black people in to menial tasks for white folks?

Would you rather be a black man today, or in 1950? If nothing has change your answer should be "it doesn't matter".

156. That does not negate the fact that racism is still quite
prevalent, as exemplified by the cartoon. Secondly, President Obama's election can be attributed to any number of factors but chief among those would be the female and youth vote. He appealed to a younger generation of voter who wanted "change." Not just change in global politics, the environment and the human condition but a change to the ideal. Commendable but a bit naive. Racism is firmly entrenched in this society, like it or not. The distinction in the popular vote was not that drastic. It was President Obama's electoral votes that were most significant and notable. So, in answer to your question, no, he would not have even been in the senate let alone a candidate for the presidency over fifty years ago. Which renders the question, would he have made it past the primaries had there been a formidable white contender?

You've passed the border into Sillyville to maintain your premise with your last sentence. Hillary Clinton alone was probably the most formidable candidate in many decades. Edwards was no slouch, either.

But anyway, this subthread was about whether there is LESS racism, or THE SAME amount of racism today as in the past. "Quite prevalent" is not responsive to that question. You're not directly responding because you know you have no argument. The answer to the question is so obvious, even a seven-year-old could see it. There is definitely less racism than in the past. It makes you seem loopy to suggest otherwise.

Are you going to tell her what it's like in her own home now next? And for what it's worth, I completely agree with her assertion that racism is every bit as prevalent and pervasive today as it was 50 years ago, just a HELL of alot more subtle due to HARD FOUGHT legal and cultural rights that black people in this country fought, were imprisoned and many DIED for.

168. I'm glad you're laughing. 'Cause the idiocy of your post is so overwhelming
and so typical of the thinking of isolated fools in this country who have obviously had NO genuine contact with a single person of color that it pretty much makes me want to cry.

For every person who was "elected" to "fight for civil rights" (I'd ask you what the hell you were babbling about but I truly don't believe that you know) there were probably half a dozen others elected to "keep the status quo." The most effective civil rights warriors in this country were never elected, mainly because they knew they would never stand a chance in an electorate that only wants to take care of the majority.

And you may want to give the credit to whites for the civil rights advances that have been done in this country but I put the credit where credit belongs. In the hands of black WARRIORS who fought and died so that the lives of their children could be better and the whites who fought alongside them. And if you were to ask a single one of these people about race relations today, they'd all acknowledge that we may have come far but there is still a LONG way to go. But then again, if you knew a black person or had ever cracked open a book of any kind, you would already know that.

We've had this argument before, and we are both ardent Obama supporters.

HOWEVER, this is NOT a subjective argument. It is entirely objective. Appeals to subjectivity are another attempt to redefine what is being debated. The terms "HARD FOUGHT" and "DIED for" among others are an attempt at squelching opposition to counter-argument, an appeal to emotion or guilt -- which makes it ironic that you would cite 'white guilt' below.

"Is there less racism today than in the past?" I've restated the question in almost every post so as to attempt to keep that focus.

Racism is personal. The above question is not racism. It is a question. The question does not require personal, anecdotal experience with racism, to answer.

And that you as a white person are better able to gauge whether racism was worse then or better now, having never experienced racism in EITHER time referenced??! I never said "questions about racism are not personal". I said to answer the question, "Is there less racism today than in the past?" one does not need first-hand experience with racism.

I've changed the term from "personal" (meaning subjective) to "first-hand" to see how you will twist the context to attack 'hands'. LOL. That context-flip was clever, btw, albeit intellectually dishonest.

... and perhaps comment differently then because, given the context of the remarks in this thread, the person who initiated the subject of objective/subjective could address my inquiry differently.

However I will suggest in response to you specifically that your indicators have subjective elements and could be entirely subjective depending on how they are instituted. For one, you have to agree on a definition of "racism" that is devoid of subjective implications and apply your objective standards to that definition. In all the works addressing racial studies to which I have been privy, I have never found anyone who has been able to do that except within their own narrow context.

Within such a context one could theoretically provide "an" objective assessment of racism's pervasiveness, but doing so is exceedingly difficult as the subjective elements always attempt to intrude, particularly when dealing with opinion polls and legislative initiatives. As an example of the latter, was The Moynihan Report racist? This would seem to be the product of a legislative attempt to address racism in a positive manner, but the reactions to it by scholars, other legislators, blacks and whites varied widely. The report in fact became part of a scholarly and common struggle over the meaning of black agency, the history of blacks in America and slavery specifically, and was used as fuel by varied ideological groups expressing differing visions on what racism meant and how pervasive it had been or would be. This occurred mostly because of his use of the scholarly work of Stanley M. Elkins, who initiated a fierce debate over the nature of slavery. So, in the end, a report intended to to be objectively anti-racist was perceived by some to be racist while still others saw it more as an expression of pervasive paternalism, but not racism per se. Who was right?

I do not know that an objective answer to that can be deduced. Certainly scholars and lay people with a far more comprehensive understanding of these issues have failed in the attempt to try.

196. Finally, actual discussion!
I don't believe anyone has created such a device yet. But like intelligence existed before the IQ test, and distance existed before the ruler, racism could be measured. This discussion was solely focused on the question of 'more or less', which are objective, but not exact. I can tell you the Mt. Everest is heavier than the Taj Mahal without having weighed either one. In this comparison, "heaviness" is an objective term.

I simply compare descriptions of the situations of minorities in various decades past, and compare them to the situations today. How many of the injustices of yesteryear have been resolved? I also take general attitudes of the at-large populace into consideration. How acceptable was racism in decades past versus today? I also take into account interpersonal relationships. How many such relationships were there (or were legal) in decades past versus today? I take into account the number of mixed race individuals. I take into account economic inclusion. How much wealth have minorities accumulated today versus decades past? I take into account elected officials. How many minorities have been elected in decades past versus today. (This question is where I include the 'how many whites voted for Obama' versus 'how many whites voted for black presidential candidates' in decades past.)

I am sure I am missing categories. What I've described is sufficient.

197. Okay, let's take your statement
"things have changed but racism is still every bit as prevalent today as it was 50 years ago, just alot more subtle"

and examine it. I will assume the statement is 100% true for the sake of this discussion. I take prevalence as the 'number of cases', and 'subtlety' as the 'degree of the cases'. Let 'number of cases' = X. Let 'degree of the average case' = Y. Then, per your description:

X1 x Y1 > X1 x Y2.

But, honestly, racism is not as prevalent. There are not the same number of racist people in the US today as there were in, say, the 1950s (let's adjust for population growth). It's more like:

X1 x Y1 > X2 x Y2.

203. "But, honestly, racism is not as prevalent." I'd ask for data to
support this claim but for every bit you find, I can find sources to dispute it. Questions of this nature are difficult to answer using standard techniques of observation and analysis. Scholarly and expert opinions remain divided on the question of discrimination and/or racism, but you managed to arrive at a simplistic definitive answer and reduced the complexity of this question AND answer to one simple formula. Wow! They need you at the Pentagon.

Social psychologists have extensively documented distortions that take place when race is involved in the course of reasoned evaluations. Evaluations regarding employment, salary, social status, education, etc. Economists and sociologists have challenged the notion that intellect, ethics, criminality and social disposition continue to frame these evaluations in social situations. The philosophical discrepancies are apparent.

How did you determine how many racists people are in this country? You stated there are not the same number today as in, say, 1950. Do you have the data or statistics to support that claim? I assume you've done extensive field studies to that effect. If not, you're just talking out of your ass, to put it mildly.

Therefore, until you're proven an authority on this subject, I've concluded that yours is just another subjective pov.

in your reply. Though I am never dissuaded by personal attacks in a debate, I do find them unpleasant (referring to that other poster).

I take a more common sense approach to this subject than what you've described. Remember that the question is whether there is LESS racism now than in 1950. We're not attempting to determine what percentage of people are racist. To that end, we need only demonstrate that there could be no other possible alternative, then stop. And that is only in regard to prevalence, or the NUMBER of people inclined toward racism, or the NUMBER of events that are racially motivated and discriminatory. (I've already answered the main question of this subthread in my post to Number23 where I demonstrated that 'subtlety' is actually another way of saying 'less'.)

The elimination of Jim Crow laws alone is sufficient to answer our NEW, redefined question (of prevalence). Every time a black person sat at the back of a bus, or drank from a segregated water fountain, or ate a black restaurant, the prevalence of racism increased. The banning of such laws reduced the number of racist events to a point that it is simply impossible for 2009 to have equaled 1950 in the prevalence of racism.

And that's only accounting for institutionalized racism in the South. Since 1950, our entire culture has radically changed. Schools, television, government... virtually every public venue in our culture is highly intolerant of racial intolerance. Such was not the case in 1950, or even when I was a child in the 1970's.

How many interracial relationships were there in 1950? How many are there today? How many mixed neighborhoods were there in 1950? How many are there today? We don't have to know the exact numbers to understand with clarity, and with absolute certainty that there are more today than there were in 1950. Every neighborhood within 50 miles of where I live is mixed.

How many miscegenation laws are on the books today? None. How often does racial steering in home buying occur? I don't know exactly, but it's illegal, and it's definitely less prevalent than in 1950.

I believe there was ONE black pro athlete in 1950. How many are there now? Definitely more. LOL. And that's an understatement. How many black musicians are celebrated by other cultures? And how many people of other races buy and enjoy their music?

I think you've either lost your common sense in regard to this subject, or you are deliberately attempting to obfuscate the issue for a purpose unknown to me. But recall that both you and Number23 are not making such an academic argument -- you're not simply saying that one cannot know the answer to the question, "Is there less racism today...?" No, you're saying THERE IS NOT LESS RACISM TODAY. You are obviously not applying the same standard of proof to your argument as you are applying to mine. So your accusations that I am 'talking out of my ass', or stating 'another subjective pov' rings hollow at best. And that's being polite on my part.

I've spent enough time on this discussion at this point. Realize, though, that while you attempt to cloud a relatively simple question, that your opinion is an outlier in the field of public opinion. While I don't often use an 'appeal to the majority' type of argument, I also realize that you can find someone somewhere that supports the most preposterous position on any and every given subject. Though it's just you and me debating here, the issue is far from a 50/50 split in the general public. Your position that racial relations have not EVER improved in the United States is so far out of the mainstream that not many people would have given the issue a fraction of the consideration that I have.

constructive dialog is most appreciated. Your demonstration of subtlety was woefully inaccurate. Subtlety simply means "obscure, difficult to understand or perceive" and particularly in this case, "operating insidiously." Unfortunately, you also distorted my position. You need only to review my previous post to verify that I did not say, "NEVER improved." I believe, I acknowledged that this was a difficult question to answer in the second sentence of my last post, which was it's premise and I maintain that one cannot make such a judgment regarding racism simply through observation. The "common sense" aspect of professional athletics should lead one to recognize that sports is big business and has absolutely NOTHING to do with discrimination, in this day and age. It has to do with the bottom line. Talent equals a championship team. Owners and coaches only see one color and that's GREEN.

True, there are no miscegenation laws on the books today but the fixed binding customs and moral attitudes of particular groups, better known as "mores," still exists and is quite prevalent in many cultures. Work place discrimination still persists, despite remarkable legal and political gains accomplished by the struggle for black civil rights. Sociologist Charles Tilly, describes "resource hoarding" as one of the major contributors to historical inequalities that includes the ways whites have, through the combined advantages of race and residence, been able to hoard political and economic resources to their own advantage at the expense of the urban poor. Thus, unspoken policies, such as "red lining," still exists, today, among other actions that have perpetuated the marginalization of African Americans in modern American life.

Finally, you stated that my opinion was, "outside the field of public opinion" and that would be true since the mainstream of public opinion continues to be white America. Again, one cannot determine the prevalence of racism without measurement and to make that determination based solely on observation (which is what you're doing) is dishonest and absurd.

213. If you've not stated that racism have never improved
Edited on Tue Jan-05-10 05:01 PM by Autonomy
then you are admitting it has improved, and we are arguing over nothing? I understand and agree with your points on racism still existing.

The motives of white people including blacks in the economy is irrelevant. The black peoples (business, sports, entertainment, whatever) have the same motives, also: to make money. Black entrepreneurs also exist, who create their own value. The culture at-large has made the inexorable move to allow full inclusion of all Americans, and thereafter such entrepreneurs are entirely self-made.

I am in no way denigrating the ultimate sacrifices made by civil rights activists. On the contrary, I am honoring them by acknowledging their success.

Re: subtletly. Slavery, apartheid, lynchings... these are not "difficult to perceive". If racism is more subtle, then it is surely improved.

Overall, I must take your post as tacit admittance that racism/race relations/the state of racial minorities/etc has, in fact, improved, but that you just have trouble verbalizing it explicitly. I think it may be a conscious effort on your part; that you see extant racism (and rightfully so), and believe that admitting things have improved will staunch further improvement. I do not believe that for a second. In my worldview, denial of reality NEVER works.

All right, let's go out on a point of agreement. Obama is doing a good job under extremely tough circumstances. Only a master of politics and policy could navigate the minefield of the current domestic and foreign political reality.

214. I will concede to the following:
BIGOTRY, by it's textbook definition, is no longer prevalent. RACISM, which is when a majority group in a nation have enough financial and political power to negatively affect another race (minority), is STILL prevalent. Subtlety makes it no LESS prevalent!
Prison has replaced lynching. Racial profiling and red lining are STILL insidious tools of racism. Small minority businesses STILL can't get financing/loans from banks. This is not denial. This is the worldview of facts that we, as a people, navigate through daily. Slavery, apartheid and lynchings have been replaced by more obscure tactics to accomplish the same goals. Racism.

I will concur with your final statement.

that neither of you will like and in all likelihood will adamantly disagree. Nevertheless, it's true.

So, your white guilt has been eradicated because a black man was elected president and therefore, racism is dead. That is laughable.
FYI, less than 50% of white voters voted for him. He constantly struggled during his campaign to overcome the fact that he is black. He has more death threats on a daily basis than any other president in history, but I guess that's because he's tall.:eyes:
I've witnessed so called liberals repeatedly attempting to make him "acceptable" with "he's half white," he's half this or that, just to convince themselves they didn't vote for an African American. To me, sir, that is the epitome of racism.

Oh, there's been "some" progress, but how does Obama being elected wipe out the sins of white america from the past, present AND the future? IT DOESN'T! Racism has and still IS an impediment to President Obama and every other AA in this country. Same shit different day.

If you've browsed this site any length of time, you'd know the claims that have been made here and the arguments against them but since you choose not to acknowledge them, you're either in denial or just plain ignorant and I suspect the later. Whether or not things have "improved" is relative depending on who you are and how you see and experience the world. Furthermore, if I'm so wrong, present that statement to AA in the African American Group and see what response you get.

Of course you don't believe in sins, because you're a racist prick! Welcome to ignore.

169. No one is saying racism is dead
The argument is: 'there is less racism today than in the past' versus 'there is the same amount of racism today as in the past'.

You cannot even present an argument to back up your claim that there is as much racism today as in the past. You are forced to try to redefine what is being debated. That is tacit admission of a loss in debating.

172. As I said, that argument depends on one's perspective, which
is not a matter of right or wrong. Just because two white people say "there is less racism today than in the past," doesn't make it gospel. I sited several examples to prove my point and could continue, indefinitely. The debate doesn't need to be redefined.

I was around in the 50s and 60s and in the thick of part of it. Maybe it's the young who take everything we old crocks fought for for granted who are able to shrug this off.

They're wrong. This is sickening. I hate to be reminded that these people are still out there and just as bad as ever.

The point would sail right over their heads. They see only what they want to see. Jesus himself washed peoples feet and said that service to others was important, a directive that most Christians, especially conservatives "conveniently" miss.

66. It is a bit peculiar that Catholics in particular should be singled out.
Now, one might very appropriately point out that for American religious righties--overwhelmingly professed Christians in the scheme of things--to revere Rush as a champion of their cause, is mighty ironic, given that Jesus surely would not approve of his hatemongering and burning contempt for "the least of these"--but why on earth single out Catholics?

I don't care what religion they are or who they are, supporters of RL are idiots. I live close to his hometown and can tell you that non-white people who live here do not like going there. They also don't like going to my old home town and trust me these places are full of good old christian bible thumpers. 65. Oh the irony......
From Wikipedia:

"Hate crime" generally refers to criminal acts which are seen to have been motivated by hatred of one or more of the listed conditions. Incidents may involve physical assault, damage to property, bullying, harassment, verbal abuse or insults, or offensive graffiti or letters.

If this isn't harassment and/or offensive to the African American community then I do not know what is.

I suggest you at least make an effort to understand the legislation before you pretend to be an expert. Perhaps you can save yourself from embarrassment via ignorance in the future.

Are you honestly surprised by this? Do you think that this type of thing is rare or isolated?

Is it the fact that the woman was a "registered Democrat" that infuriates you so? I am genuinely interested in knowing because I personally bet that you could show this photo to a thousand, to a MILLION black people and not ONE of us would be full of rage. Full of disgust and tired resignation? Definitely. Rage? If black people got enraged by every single slight or expression of injustice towards us and our communities, we'd all be dead by the age of 10.

I appreciate your anger. I'm just trying to understand it because there is nothing new, rare or even the slightest bit unique about this picture and the type of people represented by it. This is AMERICA, folks. And ain't nothing new about this type of thing.

89. I'm feeling your anger
Anyone with a slight degree of education about our history would understand that this is extremely racist. This is different than if, as someone said, Bush were shining Hillary's shoes, with the implication that the one is not fit to shine the other's shoes. People who think this is not racist lack understanding and sensitivity about racism.

However, the first thought that I had was that the idiots of our country feel pretty powerless now about the outrageous reality of an African American president. I am a political science major with a concentration in African American studies and I've done several research projects on the civil rights movement, reconstruction, etc... I feel passionately about racism. Yesterday I attended an Emancipation Proclamation celebration at a church where I did a documentary project a few years ago. They were saying that the tea baggers are the same people from earlier years that used to wear hoods. They were also saying that every time blacks make some great progress in this country it is followed by huge backlash. So my point is that the person who did this should definitely be fired and this is absolutely unacceptable and should be confronted. However, it is a reminder to me of how small and meaningless the person who made this picture must be. This does not diminish Obama or African Americans, though it attempts to. It diminishes the idiot who made this and the idiots who enjoy this. They are very small people.

interesting, though, how the headline writer put the word "inappropriate" in quotations marks -- as if there could be any doubt . . .

you're absolutely right . . . "some people suck just because they suck" . . . have you noticed, though, that the number of people who actually DO suck seems to be growing exponentially in recent years? . . . or maybe I'm just becoming more cynical in my old age . . . whatever . . .

great rant . . . should be inscribed on the wall of Limburger's hospital room, in BIG letters . . . in bold . . . and italics . . . and quotated . . . love to see Arlo do an "Alice's Restaurant" kinda thingy with it . . . :)

- if the image was reversed - with Palin buffing Obama's shoes - would you see it as sexist?

Disgusting images are a byproduct of freedom of speech and expression. While not always pretty, it's not something I'm willing to lose over a grotesque photo-shop.

Everyone is guilty of double standards now and then, but the modern right winger is amazing in his/her ability to convince himself that the rules apply to everyone but him. 106. You are not being consistent.
You said "I don't like everyone. I won't lie to you. But that decision is never based on the color of their skin, their sexuality, their gender, or their religion." But then you turn right around and call Limbaugh "fat." Don't you know that fat people also face discrimination in this country? Whether Limbaugh is fat or skinny or anything in between has nothing to do with anything. I don't like Limbaugh either, but it's solely based upon his stand on the issues. If you dropped the "fat" reference and cut back on the non stop obscenities, I would have more sympathy for your position.

As far as the state worker goes, that was despicable. I agree with you on that. But remember that this worker like any other public employees is protected by civil service rules, and when something like this happens there has to be a process. I hope they eventually get fired but if the employee fights it it might take a long time to happen.

116. The sad part is
Obama has shown that he will try to win these people over with kindness, from beer summits to compromises.

Now, I add a disclaimer, as I know there are many "European Americans" who are SICK of Racism and every other form of bigotry there is. And yes, I do acknowledge, and whole heartedly condemn, attempts by certain so called "leaders" of the minority to use racism as an excuse to avoid criticism and responsibility.

HOWEVER..
If you wonder why those of us with darker skin keep bringing stuff like this up, it is because not only is racism still very much around, but Obama's election has been used to camouflage it! If you honestly think just because we have a black man in the White House that people have stopped using racial slurs, stopped throwing out resumes, and stopped treating minorities like sh**, you are either dishonest to yourself, or a simple liar. The fact I see some people on DU defend this photo is a sign that White Supremacy fantasies are still alive and well. Dark skinned people are still the "last hired, first fired." Our schools get the least funding, and least support. We still get yelled at if we get government assistance, still end up filling most of the cemetery spaces in Military cemeteries, and still fill most of the prison cells.

PS: As far as the woman being a "Registered Democrat" I really really hope she is not one of those people that cheered when Hillary said "he's not as Muslim as far as I know", or when Bill said they got "mugged."

PPS: just to be "fair and balanced" I will point out this tragedy. Obama got elected the first black president in part because he is very much detached from Black Culture, in short, he is like Tiger Woods used to be, a dark-skinned person that acts and talks white (and sadly, panders way too much to certain European Americans of the centrist variety.)

163. Your PSS smells like shit......
Obama is not much detached from Black Culture at all. He has a Black Wife and sorry if he doesn't talk like your average Rapper, but Rev. Wright was his pastor till Wright was roasted by the media for the fact that he wasn't what White people "espected" (although White Ministers can pretty say whatever they want, and no one gives a damn)

but the fact that you are stereotyping what "Black" is, and saying that Obama is not that is exactly what the problem is with many folks and their thinking.

What I'm now waiting for is for folks to allow that Black man they elected the same freedom to govern as they have given his White counterparts over the years. Instead Barack Obama finds everyone's foot up his ass for every single move he makes....and disrespecting him while doing it.

Far as I'm concerned, the fact that some promote primarying him, while others call him a one termer (after 11 fucking months???), and mention him in the past tense with their "he could have been a contender" tribble, is so fucking over the top, until it makes me wonder why they feel the need to go there so quickly....besides them acting like they "own" the man.....
Those attitudes, as much as folks try to justify them, are what tells us that Racism is alive and well, and unfortunately, probably isn't going anywhere fast anytime soon.

We all know this is a fake picture.Ms Palin wish she could get her shoes polished. But they haven't come out with one for rubber boots and timberlines because she eats therefore she hunts. No need for pumps.Look racism has been here a long time, and it has gotten more sophisticated.People who are racist openly give less than a damn about how any one feels. It is the people who hide their racism behind the outer facade,is what makes you angry. Anyone who is an undercover racist would not dare let you know who they are because they must live and work amongst all types of ethnic and cultural backgrounds. It the systemic things that they do that hurt the most, like sitting in political office, working in Human Resource departments, law enforcement, housing, education, and media.Yes,some things have changed since the civil rights movement. But it is only because of this movement that a lot of our children tend to not see racism in its glory.Make no mistake it is there forever lurking in the shadows. The picture in my opinion,is a poorly crafted joke with racism as an undertone meant to draw attention. The only problem was that the ridiculous person that posted it, got more attention than they bargained for.It doesn't surprise me that the reports say they belong to the democratic party. There are bigots every where. And before the picture went out if they would have known that they could possibly be fired and end up in the unemployment line with those people, there would be no picture.

From a certain vantage point, one occupued by a good many well respected posters here, it really does appear that Obama has become the Right's 'shoe shine boy'.

It certainly appears that his job is not to lead the country, but to put a polish on the RW/corporation friendly turds dropped on the public by congress.

157. Who remembers the south in the 50's?
Yes, photoshops like the one referenced upset me, but I am not about to go into terminal apoplexy over it. I think the younger DU has no idea what true racism was. Here is a very short history lesson of what blacks faced in the south in the 50's:

white and colored drinking fountains(you have probably seen photos)
not allowed in restaurants in town, only the little black-owned shops outside of town
expected to give way on the sidewalks to white people
hardly ever allowed to vote
woe to a black man who looked a white woman in the face
could buy clothing & shoes at stores in town, but could not try anything on, Sears & MonkeyWard catalogs were used Big Time
if a storekeeper shortchanged them, no sense arguing they would lose & probably be arrested for causing a disturbance

You might ask why not just open their own stores? No one would sell them property or rent space.

Yes, things have changed drastically since the 50's; but, racism still lives in peoples minds. Now they are limited mostly to photoshop to express it.

When I first saw it a month or two or three ago, I just shook my head.

I read one response that went something like, "we blacks commonly deal with stuff like this."

Its true.

Glad to see so many folks so outraged by it though.

It didn't outrage me.

Watermelon-gate and monkey-gate outraged me though.
