Woman bought for two cows forced to perform as one
Hunched over a sewing machine, Jennipher Alupot is an unlikely poster girl for the women's rights movement. In fact, the young Ugandan mother is totally unaware of how her story – almost too horrific to be believed – has caused waves across the country and down the corridors of power, ultimately giving thousands of abused women the chance of justice.

For seven years, Jennipher was forced to breastfeed the puppies of her husband's hunting dogs. After drinking and smoking heavily, Nathan Alowoi would appear at the marital bed, bind his young wife's legs and hands together and force the mewling animals to her nipple.

He had handed over two cows to his father-in-law as part of the "bride price" for his new wife. So, he reasoned, if the cows were no longer around to provide milk then his new purchase would have to provide for the pups. "I had to feed them all through the night; then in the morning he would untie me," his wife, now 26, explains matter-of-factly...

...Although the particularly grim abuse that Jennipher suffered appears to be a one-off, domestic violence against women is widespread in Uganda. According to a 2006 government survey, more than two in three women have suffered some form of abuse at the hands of a spouse...

Tell me again about hysterical "femi-nazis"

Here in egalitarian America, in the 21st century, it is thought that between 15% to 25% of women have been abused by their male "significant others"

Why can't the world, especially the male part of the world, grow beyond such barbarity? For myself, I blame religion and its teaching of the inferiority of women for a lot of this - but simple ignorance and "traditional values" are also to blame.

It is so sad.

1. grow beyond such barbarity?... it serves them well? and religion is not
the only group embracing patriarchy. we have a new cult like group that uses cavemanism. it is all biological and they cant help themselves. in the dna.

with that type of reasoning, dont expect it to end. and it is only about giving them power and control.

"Feminazi is a pejorative term coined by conservative talk radio host Rush Limbaugh to refer to the feminists that he personally finds the most obnoxious. According to Limbaugh, "a feminazi is a woman to whom the most important thing in life is seeing to it that as many abortions as possible are performed" (source: The Way Things Ought To Be , Rush Limbaugh, p. 192–93, July 2, 1992). Limbaugh also uses the "feminazi" term during discussions of feminist actions or attitudes not specifically related to abortion. According to Limbaugh, the term denotes a woman who makes radical feminism her lifestyle; it is not a term to be applied to feminists in general, but is rather a title to be earned through extremely excessive activism"....

15. ... The act, however, turned disastrous when the family lost its third born child, who was sharing
his mother’s breasts with the puppies, to suspected rabies early last year. Rabies is a fatal viral disease that causes acute inflammation of the brain in humans and other mammals. According to Ms Caroline Odoi, the Country Development Initiative Coordinator of global anti-poverty agency, ActionAid International, the police have not handled the case with the seriousness it should be accorded. “This poor woman reported this case to police. The man was arrested but released in a day. No medical examination was made and neither were the puppies got as evidence,” she said. Ms Alupot, who currently lives in a grass thatched house that doubles as a counselling room for Pentecostal Revival Ministries after her husband threw her out, told Daily Monitor on Saturday that she started breastfeeding the puppies three years ago. “My husband is a hunter. When people killed his dogs, he bought five puppies but feeding them was a problem. One night I woke up and found a puppy on my breast feeding. My husband was standing nearby with a panga and threatened to cut me into pieces if I resisted,” Ms Alupot narrated ...

19. 'Broad brush man-bashing'
is another one of those phrases that men use....and frankly, too many men deserve it. I have helped three women move out...or helped them move a spouse out...in the last three weeks. One was being used as a free room and board arrangement while said spouse pursued other interests, and two were being physically abused (one of those women had a daughter who was being abused, too, just to make life interesting).

There are wonderful, loving men out there. I know several of them. There are even more cave men.

I can't imagine why any woman would take on the job of trying to reform these men, but even I have had at least one go at it. If I have any piece of advice it's to have your own bank account, abolish bride prices as a barbaric act......although the Islamic bride price was meant to provide support for the wife if the husband divorced her or died, as far as I understand it....and make sure that the guy is at least paper trained (yes, that's a joke. Partly.)

37. Honestly, the story sounds like illiterate villager nonsense.
Edited on Fri Jan-01-10 09:18 AM by dustbunnie
Baby barking like a dog and dying of rabies, while the mother is fine? Not likely is the answer to both those charges. Have you ever heard a baby bark like a dog? And it's also obvious that the villagers have a reason for not wanting to endure the man in their midst any longer, i.e. his nasty dogs.

I suppose sadism is as good a reason as any for sick behavior, but feeding puppies cow or human milk would likely sicken or kill them, so really no point in pursuing the exercise more than once, as is charged, if the man really wanted his litters to survive.

But considering the way women are treated, if it takes a lie for women to escape, then so be it. I would do it too in a heartbeat. (Edited to add - scratch that. She wants to take him back. Guess I was right about village nonsense.)

So how did the baby catch rabies if the mother doesn't have it?

61. Yes, it's interesting isn't it?

Mind you, this is a land where old crones and babies can still be infected with demons that cast evil spells upon the populace, so anything's possible I guess. But normally, you'd be right. :)

I also believe that puppies need to be fed every two hours, so not sure how this woman managed to feed them during the night time hours, but they survived their daily starvings. Not to mention the incompatability of dogs/human milk that would have rendered them sick or dead.

Somehow, I'm thinking this woman suffered greatly after the loss of her child. Who knows, maybe she had post partum psychotic episodes. Maybe she hated her husband, as did the villagers. And maybe he beat her or otherwise treated her badly and the dog story was a way to escape. The details just don't really add up.

The man claims to be a "seasoned hunter," who paid his two cows as a bride price eleven years ago. Wouldn't you...uhh...need some milk over those eleven years? I cannot imagine the bride contract he entered into prohibited him from buying more cows--and he certainly seems to have found the money to buy more puppies. So what, exactly, is going on here?

I hate to sound like an old curmudgeon, but this wouldn't be the first time activists made up a really wild, scathing story to try to sway public opinion. Two points to the first person to name this woman without clicking on the image:

48. Terrible story but I have to ask
what's with the diatribe about america? This is in uganda. Why are their problems fair to blame on the US?

"it is thought that between 15% to 25% of women have been abused by their male "significant others"

The "it is thought" bit doesn't really inspire confidence in those numbers. Especially for such an emotionally and politically charged subject. It reminds me of a study done that found some unbelievable high number of college women had been raped. Problem was they used a question along the lines of "have you ever felt pressured to have sex" and included everyone who answered yes as being a rape victim.

A quarter of all women being abused doesn't seem accurate to me.
