Savannah GA spends millions to end poverty, wins national recognition for efforts
Edited on Mon Dec-28-09 06:34 PM by Bluebear
Helping people move themselves out of poverty is neither quick nor cheap.

Through a combination of local tax dollars, federal funding and grants from national foundations, the city of Savannah channeled more than $5 million toward poverty reduction.

And that's not including almost $11 million in federal stimulus money allotted for teachers in high-poverty schools, more than $8 million raised in this year's United Way campaign, more than $800,000 spent in federal funds for home-buyer programs over the past two years, or the hundreds of thousands of dollars - if not millions - raised by organizations for their own programs.

"My administration is committed to breaking the cycle of poverty that has kept this city from realizing its full potential," said Mayor Otis Johnson.

6. Go Otis! That's a good man.
When I see him around town he almost always speaks to me. But I don't think he always remembers why he knows me.

(The answer is that I'm a casual friend of his brother.)

Otis is one of those people with whom you can really see the mental wheels turning, though. Then the lights come on when he remembers who you are.

9. Savannah is a very delightful shade of blue.
There are many dynamic, diverse incredible things about it.

I encourage you to visit, especially in the early spring.

In the historic district, when the azaleas are in full bloom, it would be hard to find a more beautiful place.
