Arpaio Turns to Former Bush DOJ Official To Stymie Federal Probe
Arpaio Turns to Former Bush DOJ Official To Stymie Federal Probe
Zachary Roth | December 14, 2009, 11:12AM

Sheriff Joe Arpaio has turned to a heavy-hitting former Bush Justice Department official and veteran Washington lawyer to help thwart a federal civil-rights probe of his controversial law-enforcement tactics.

Since March, investigators with DOJ's Civil Rights Division have been looking into allegations of racial profiling and related issues in connection with Arpaio's enforcement of immigration laws. Between 2004 and 2007, Arpaio reportedly had 2,700 law suits filed against his office -- 50 times the number of New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Houston combined.

Arpaio first pledged to cooperate with the probe. But since then, he appears to have turned to Washington lawyer Bob Driscoll to help slow-roll it, by filing a series of what look like frivolous complaints against the Justice Department.

When are the voters in Maricopa County going to get tired of Mr. Arpaio's antics?

7. Why is Arpaio so popular with the voters?
Arpaio seems to have a big lead in his Governor's run. 51% is what I heard. The voters in Maricopa County seem to like the guy, for some reason.

21. Take it for what it's worth...
"The poll was conducted Oct. 22-25 by the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University and Eight/KAET"

"The statewide sample of 652 registered voters was 37 percent Republican, 34 percent Democrat and 29 percent Independent. Fifty-nine percent of the interviews were conducted in Maricopa County, 17 percent in Pima County and 24 percent in Arizona’s other counties. Forty-nine percent of the voters interviewed were men and 51 percent are women. The sampling error for the statewide sample survey is plus or minus 3.8 percent. The sampling error for the Maricopa County sample, which included 389 registered voters, is plus or minus 5.0 percent."

Must be on to something as he keeps getting re-elected.

Do you have another explanation?

27. Well.....
Call me a soft touch but I doubt that the voting majority of Maricopa County are all boiling over with hate and racism.

The Sheriff has created the image that -

1) Crime is less likely to happen in his AO due to his reputation

2) Criminals are less likely to commit crimes again after having gone through his system

3) says he is willing to enforce laws that are on the books that are ignored by other agencies.

You can argue if all the above are true or not but in the end I think that is the image that he creates and the voters like. His image protects him as very few govt officials want to be seen as the guy who brought down a law enforcement official for enforcing the laws to their fullest.

13. Funny how all those 'law-and-order' types have to lawyer up.
Guess they just don't understand that the law also pertains to them.

18. They're only tough towards those with less power than themselves.
When a bigger fish (in this case, the Feds) shows up, they wet their pants.

Has been the truth about bullies since before the beginning of time.
