I would like the unrec feature expanded
Let's allow the internecine wars to be expanded such that we can unrec not only OPs, but also replies.

2. That sets up a full-on "Troll Hunter" scenario...
Much like that seen at dKos... hideous waste of time and it only amounts to a shit stirring device.

I'd like to see the unrec go away completely. If you don't like an OP for whatever reason, hide it FCOL. Then the admins can decide if they want to track that information, or not, and use it to the benefit of DU, or not. Meh... meta... pft.

7. If they take away the unrec, they should take away rec, too, and end it all.
If we can rate threads to appear on the front page and the Greatest page, we can unrec them. If not, we should do neither, do away with the Greatest page, and put something of substance on the front page. Because with the unrec, the front page was just a battle of ego-stroking cliques, and the majority of intelligent DUers had to hold their noses until they could get into the Lounge and past the garbage out there. Without some system to check these cliques and counter their egos, there's no point in a rating system at all.

Do away with both, or keep both. Anything else is undemocratic.

14. I don't agree... and I feel your last comment is highly sanctimoneous...
Rec without unrec is a one-way street... and majority rules without the gang-banging and head-butting.

When you vote in a democratic system, you vote FOR a candidate. If you vote for one candidate above another in an attempt to place your vote against a greater evil, that is your choice, but you are still voting FOR someone over another. THAT is democratic.

15. What do you call an election with only one choice?
It's not democracy.

16. Bullshit...
You still have two choices... to rec, or not to req... simple. Just as it's your choice if you want to vote or not.

17. To vote or not to vote for the one choice is not an election.
It's not a democracy.

3. Would this be like some sort of escalation? No peace prize for you!?
This entire unrec thing could make for an interesting thesis paper in group dynamics. One could even view it, a-la conservative nut-jobs, as unnecessary "government" interference in the market of free ideas.

Good luck to us all.

5. that would defeat the purpose of rec/unrec
Since all rec/unrec does is put an OP on or keep an OP off the Greatest Page, there's no point to rec/unrec replies.

6. To what end?
Would the replies with high rec or unrec totals add or detract from the OP's rating, or would the replies to the thread be rearranged and ranked in order of rating, or would the ratings appear out to the side so that we could judge from the ratings of each reply whether we wanted to bother reading it or not? Would there be some way to read the Greatest page for replies with high ratings regardless of the rating of the OP's ratings?

I'm not against it, but I don't understand all this discussion of the rec/unrec feature. Do the same people go on Amazon.com and argue that customers should only be allowed to give a positive rating to products there, or that they should be able to give negative ratings to parts of a product, but not the other? "The Bosch Mixer deserves a four star rating, but the little rubber pads on the bottom are the pits and deserve only one star, if that."

I feel like there's some life-and-death argument going on that I don't understand.

12. should separate up and down votes
the net number doesn't give all that much information, it could mean lack of interest, or it could mean sharply divided opinion. If we could see how many recs AND how many unrecs, that would give a better sense of the overall level of interest in a particular thread.
