Fort Hood cop says her career has been cut short
FORT WORTH, Texas -- One of two civilian police officers who brought down the Army psychiatrist accused of going on a shooting rampage at Fort Hood said her wounds from the attack will cut short her career as street police officer.

Sgt. Kimberly Munley said doctors have told her she needs a total knee replacement, a surgery set for January, but that her new knee is likely to wear out sooner if she runs or carries the 15- to 25-pound gear pack required by her job.

"I do want to stay in law enforcement. I'm not going to be able to do what I did before, which is basically work the street," she told Wilmington, N.C., television station WECT on Wednesday. "It's going to give me another avenue to look in as far as possibly teaching and instructing."

In a posting on her blog, Munley said she was lucky that she did not lose her leg, where a bullet hit an artery. She said she now has to use a wheelchair and walker, but "cannot complain one bit" because she feels she was given a second chance at life.

"I have addressed more or less every thought and emotion about what's happened to everyone else - the injured and the ones that did not make it and their families," Munley told the television station. "I can't tell you if I have any thoughts towards what he's done to me because I've been too overwhelmed with trying to come to terms with how everyone else has suffered through this."

I hope she recovers well enough to work in a job that she will like. She is lucky. I didn't realize that an artery had been hit.

1. Hero
Sometimes I don't like cops but this one is a genuine hero.

2. At this year's Veterans day breakfast
I prefaced my remarks with a salute to Sgt. Kimberly Munley.

It took a woman with unhesitating guts and fortitude to stand in direct confrontation with a mass killer while others sought shelter around corners and behind walls. Who knows how many live today because of this unselfish act of heroism.

:patriot:

5. She is a hero but in fairness to those who sought shelter
they were unarmed. (Unless there were some armed MPs that hid that I don't know about?) I also heard there were many that stayed to help the wounded but maybe that was after shots stopped.

If she had an artery injured I wonder who helped her to stop the bleeding. I am so glad she survived and so thankful for her bravery. I hope whatever she goes to next brings her great satisfaction.

7. I was referring to a couple of newswire pictures that showed
armed police with bullet proof vests being cautious and staying out of the line of fire. Different training I guess, as Sgt Munley's training stressed immediate action and confrontation in these situations. Studies show lives are saved by quickly engaging the target shooter.

10. Thanks, I hadn't seen those! That cautious approach seems
more fitting for a showdown between police and a gun man, not for a situation where the gunner is actually shooting a roomful of people.
Might be the same training but she just had focus on 'I have to stop him' that overose any concern for her own safety.
God knows how many lives she saved.

3. I am so sorry to hear this. She has earned her fame justly. She should be rewarded.
Not penalized. I hope she gets a very rewarding job and is amply compensated for her injuries. She saved many, many lives. She is a hero...

4. Should be
But I wouldn't bet on it. Five years from now, there will be a "where are they now?" segment which will be very depressing.

6. "Where are they now" mostly deals with coked up 80 sitcom starts and musicians.
She'll get a nice teaching job or a desk job and keep working in law enforcement. This isn't the end of her career, just that typical part of the job.

8. At the very least, she should get lifetime FULL medical coverage
and perhaps compensation for the potential loss of a pension she would surely have worked for and earned..
