CNN memo: "Cho video and gun pictures--NO MORE USEAGE!!!"
Gawker: CNN Bans Use of Virginia Tech Killer Footage

Guess CNN feels like they've milked the Virginia Tech killer video dry. The following memo just came down:

Subject: Cho video and gun pictures--NO MORE USEAGE!!!

Per Jon Klein,

* No more use of the Cho videotape on our air.

* No more use of pictures of Cho with guns.

Media Operations is in the process of killing out of the system all vo's and sots with still pictures of Cho holding guns plus all video of him talking.

The John King package, First Killing Why?, and the Sean Callebs pkg. Cho the Early Years have been updated using appropriate video. All packages are being updated on a per request basis.

The library will be archiving the original versions of the packages, but these can only be run per approval from Standards and Practices....

5. Considering 32 other people are still dead, it's safe to say the violent side is known
and will be remembered.

CNN's backtracking in response to criticism against media's saturation use of the material. And maybe some families, friends of victims are less inclined to participate in their programming while they keep repeating that material.

2. I commend CNN for this.
Why promote this guy? This is exactly what he wanted. Why give him what he wanted and encourage others to do the same?

The guy was disturbed, and the media is capitalizing on that. I think it's disgraceful that they would take advantage of something in that manner.

Those images should have never been shown in the first place.

Our media has a "Nancy Grace" mentality when it comes to horrible stories, and it needs to stop.

3. exactly
No one says that the tapes should not be studied for any info that could help prevent this in the future. But tv pundits and all of America doing the studying 24/7? Days after the shooting? Disgusting exploitation of the tragedy for ratings and clearly intending to provoke other shootings for more ratings. This guy said he was inspired by the "martyrs" of the Columbine killers. Who will he inspire now?

7. There was a time in America where something like these images
would have never been shown.

I agree that experts should view them, study them, and determine what can be done to prevent innocent people from being killed in the future. The images of the dead people are also disturbing, and very upsetting, but only because I feel sorrow that they will never have the opportunity to live their lives.

So many young, happy smiling faces that never got the chance to live. And that goes for our troops as well. There is no excuse for what George Bush and his cronies are doing to our troops. They aren't supporting them, they are murdering them.

4. This is wrong... they use the images for hype and then don't follow-up
with any kind of analysis... typical CNN and typical media today...

6. too little too late
The damage is done and Cho's manifesto will live on indefinitely on YouTube and other sites like it. They should've exercised discretion beforehand knowing it would be playing into the killer's wished and be insensitive and gurtful to the victim's families.
