19. I started felling bad in '93 also, but without the internet
So much of what was occurring went on below my radar, so to speak.

This time anyone who wants to can see that there is no democracy here, other than the right to type out one's angst. "Free elections?" Yeah, every four years, you get to choose between two war mongering corporatists, who enable the bankers and the defense industries against the rights of the middle incomed to stay secure.

Wellstone is busy spinning in his pre-mature grave.

22. You are really so right.
I turned off in about 96, after the election. I woke up and found myself in Seattle in 99 for the protest.

It's all become too much for me now, it's so obvious what is being done to us as a people that even voting seems silly. We protest, we call, we write, we email, we vote. Better than 70% of the nation wants a public option with health care for all and if you watch the debate today in the Senate it's so clear that we have no place there.

It's sad. It really is.

24. if you were someone in the streets of Seattle, in 1999, my hat is off to you.

From the little that I have been able to glean (After all, Big Media isn't talking) you guys in the street were preventing the very meetings wherein the GMO seeds would have been forced upon Europe. So that allows us to be able to turn to European scientists to hear a more independent take on the GMO research.

If you know other things that the actions of the protesters accomplished, please feel free to brag. I'd love to know more.

10. You've made your decision based on speculation by everyone else.
Why not listen to the guy who has been doing all the work on it?

11. I made my decision based on my own understanding of the situation...
...after doing a lot of reading - and also based on my belief that war is almost never the answer.

Speculation by others didn't enter into it. I'm just tired of the president's pretty speeches about lame policies. I'll read about the details tomorrow morning.

15. Based on what others have speculated is in the policy.
Unless you have been in the situation room, perhaps.

17. I couldn't care less about the situation room, since it was filled with...
...military without those who would offer a peaceful solution.

Many first-rate non-military minds have written about the situation in Afghanistan. I'm much more interested in the opinions of writers who understand the culture and are also aware of the motives of our military industrial complex.

that this will last through 2011 and that's a long time to waste more money and shed more blood.

20. The ONLY thing that would make this even semi-palatable
Is an ironclad, drop dead, and-we're-outta-here deadline for Afghanistan. We've been dicking around there for nearly 10 years. The only thing worse than pulling out at the earliest possible date would be to dick around for another two or three years and then pull out. Well, there's one thing worse, and that's to maintain this open-ended, unfocused, infinite commitment to a dysfunctional patch of land that hasn't done squat-ah except repel invaders for centuries.

This isn't a military problem; it won't yield to a military solution.
