Florida Democratic hopeful says she favors gay adoption
Florida Democratic hopeful says she favors gay adoption

By Beth Reinhard | Mia Herald

FORT LAUDERDALE — Alex Sink, Florida's chief financial officer and the leading Democratic candidate for governor, told the state's largest gay rights group Sunday that homosexuals should be allowed to adopt if it's in the children's "best interest.''

Florida is the only state with an outright ban on adoption by lesbians and gay men. Sink said it should be up to a judge to determine whether it's in a child's best interest to be adopted, on a case-by-case basis.

"We need a system in which all of our children are assured that they live in a healthy, loving home -- a home that's determined not by any law,'' Sink told about 300 gay activists who packed a gallery of modern artwork at the Museum of Art in Fort Lauderdale. "The decision has to be made by the judge, in consultation with the experts, to determine what is the best for that individual child.''

Sink said she looked forward to working with Democratic state Sen. Nan Rich of Weston, who has unsuccessfully pushed legislation to repeal the state's gay adoption ban. But Sink said after the speech that she had not read the bill and would not immediately commit to signing it if it passed and she was elected governor.

1. oh well, nice knowing you
Florida will tear her up.

I have lived in Georgia and Louisiana and have travelled to some rural, backroads, BFE hick towns and have never seen the ignorant racism that I have encountered working a blue collar job here in Florida (Ok, North FL at that).

I work with and around the most hatefilled ignorant racist (expletive deleted)'s down here. I have almost walked off the job several times.

2. HAtefilled, ignorant racists are probably in every state, sadly.
I just moved to GA and am reluctant to voice my (liberal) opinions anywhere, though I have seen a few Obama stickers.

I hope this woman is a success and can override the hate.

if you end up wanting to rent a house, my mom is a realtor and there are a lot of desperate home owners looking ot pay their mortgage.

Have you been to the Moon River Brewing Company on Bay Street yet? you must go. I cant wait to get back there next week when I'm in town for Turkey Day

6. Hmm, good to know.
Depending on where I find a job, I am thinking of buying something after this lease is up.
No, haven't been there, but have been to The Distillery-that was kind of nice, and it's pretty new. I've heard of the Moon River...I have lots of exploring to do!
