Lieberman: Bringing terror suspects to U.S. for trial 'inconceivable'
By Michael O'Brien - 11/13/09 11:16 AM ET

It is "inconceivable" that the U.S. would bring the alleged terrorist masterminds of the Sept. 11 attacks to New York for trial, Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) said Friday.

Lieberman, the chairman of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, said that the terror detainees, including alleged Sept. 11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, should be tried in military tribunals outside the U.S.

“The terrorists who planned, participated in and aided the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks are war criminals, not common criminals," Lieberman said in a statement. "The individuals accused of committing these heinous, cowardly acts of intentionally targeting unsuspecting, defenseless civilians should therefore be tried by military commission rather than in civilian courts in the United States.”

Lieberman, an Independent who caucuses with Democrats but maintains a hawkish streak on national security issues, said that the terrorist suspects are not entitled to the same rights as U.S. citizens in court.

"I share the views of more than 140 family members of the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks who recently wrote to the Senate urging that the individuals charged with responsibility for those attacks should be tried by military commission rather than in civilian courts in the United States," Lieberman said. "It is inconceivable that we would bring these alleged terrorists back to New York for trial, to the scene of the carnage they created eight years ago, and give them a platform to mock the suffering of their victims and the victims’ families, and rally their followers to continue waging jihad against America.”

Lieberman voted with Republicans last week on a losing vote seeking to bar U.S. courts from trying terrorist detainees.

9/11 Families Want Guantánamo Detainees Prosecuted In Federal Court

NEW YORK - November 10 - A new video released by the American Civil Liberties Union today features family members of 9/11 victims calling for federal trials of terrorism suspects. The Obama administration is expected to announce by November 16 whether certain Guantánamo detainees will be transferred to the U.S. for trial in federal courts or be tried in the illegitimate military commissions.

“It is of utmost importance to me that those who were responsible for the attacks of 9/11 face a court,” says Adele Welty in the ACLU video. Her son was a New York firefighter killed at the World Trade Center.

“It’s very important to me that we get the right people,” says John Leinung, whose stepson was killed while working in the Twin Towers. “That the right people are punished or held to account for what happened on 9/11.”

Pat Perry, whose son was a police offer killed on 9/11, says she would rather see the Guantánamo detainees who have been held without charge “appear in open court where we can all sift out what we feel is really the truth and the judges can make a decision based on our Constitution.”

These 9/11 family members all say they agree that holding detainees without charge in Guantánamo is a betrayal of American values and they look forward to true justice being served in federal court.

“My son gave his life to save those trapped in the Twin Towers,” Welty says, “and it does not honor him that we violate our Constitution in retaliation for what happened on September 11.”

5. So people accused of a terrible crime should have less chance to defend themselves...
...under the idiotic logic of Joe Lieberman.

9. Making us Dems put up with Lieberman is inconceivable to me!
I'm more confortable having the Feds contain the 911 prisoner than I am having Lieberman on the loose!

12. I think that Joe and some others are simply afraid of what these folks might say
The last thing these guys want are threads leading back to the 9/11 attacks to be pulled on. The whole thing could come undone. If Joe had his way, these guys would have been disappeared and never heard from again.

13. War criminals???
We weren't in a declared war.

If anything, Bush and Cheney should be in the Hague for masterminding the clusterfuck in Iraq.
