Dobbs quits CNN in pursuit of higher calling
Lou Dobbs, last of the original CNN anchors, who became known for his opposition to illegal immigration, abruptly quit this week, stoking speculation that one of the network’s most visible faces could run for political office.

Mr Dobbs told the Financial Times he had not ruled out the myriad offers that have poured in, including political office. He will continue to host his popular radio programme, Lou Dobbs Radio.

“I have a sense of liberation on what I can, what I should and what I want to do,” Mr Dobbs said. “This is not only an extraordinarily complex and challenging time for anyone living in this country . . . I want to be a full participant.”

A run at public office from the one-time, self-declared “lifelong Republican”, who views himself as “Mr Independent”, could be troublesome for the political right as his support for abortion rights and scorn for other Republican party policies could split supporters, Salon.com observed in a recent piece entitled “Lou Dobbs for president!”.
