Moyers lays it on the line: Bush lied and the media helped him do it.
Edited on Wed Apr-18-07 04:27 PM by Atman
This is a fascinating and painful story. And all of us on DU knew it was happening, but we were all ignored/laughed at/derided while Bush put on his dog and pony show and the media helped him sell it. I think this article is more important for the freepers and CUers to read than anyone else.

Buying the War

Bill Moyers' New Documentary Exposes How The Government, The New York Times And The Mainstream Press Sold Us The War.

April 19, 2007
By Alistair Highet

"I bet you didn’t know this. On March 6, 2003, President George Bush held a press conference at the White House. In that press conference the president said that Saddam Hussein and his weapons were “a direct threat to this country.”

More than 24 times during the press conference the president reflected on Al Qaeda and 9/11 and a connection between Saddam Hussein, all of which we know now was untrue. Bad enough. But here’s the chilling part, as revealed in Bill Moyers’ upcoming Buying the War (which will air on PBS on Wednesday, April 25 at 9 p.m.): after the president’s speech the White House press corps, those highly paid and highly visible big shots from CBS, CNN, the New York Times , The Washington Post and so on, started rasing their hands. But certain reporters had been pre-selected by the administration to be chosen by the president, something that everybody in the room was aware of. At one point, the president is shown to say, “This is scripted” and he makes a little laugh. Among the tough questions thrown to the president, or should we say, pre-selected, were “How is your faith guiding you?” to which the president responded, “My faith sustains me because I pray daily.” Media critic Eric Boehlert, reflecting on this piece of theater notes that there is a lot of nervous giggling going on. “I don’t now if it is out of embarrassment for him or embarrassment for them because they still continued to play along,” he says. “After a question was done. They all shot up their hands and pretended they had a chance of being called on.”

<snip>

The heart of the game that was played involved Ahmed Chalabi, an Iraqi con-man who had been on the payroll of the CIA. By the mid 1990s the CIA realized that Chalabi was a fraud and dropped him. But Chalabi’s friends in the government kept supporting him and the fictional Iraqi National Congress, a group that had no legitimacy or standing or independent existence. Suddenly, Iraqi “defectors” started to turn up in the New York Times , Vanity Fair , and 60 Minutes among other places, talking about hidden chemical weapons factories and mobile chemical weapons labs and so on. Chalabi arranged for Judith Miller of the Times to meet with such a defector, which began a series of stories in the Times supporting the government’s claims. The whole thing was a campaign of false information kicked off by the government, filtered through Chalabi to the press, who then fed it back to us.

Not everyone bought it. The Knight-Ridder newspaper group quickly made contacts with intelligence sources who told them that the case against Iraq was bogus. But the Knight-Ridder papers don’t have a lot of clout, and even some of their own newspapers refused to run their stories because they were out of step with the pro-war climate."

They put the blame on the same Dem targets that the media chooses for them and they don't even realize it.

26. I care, dammit! I started crying when I read the part about reporters
raising their hands and pretending they had a chance of being called on. Like all of DU I knew we've been had, but I didn't know just *HOW* badly we've been had! I knew at the time the "evidence" about Saddam's WMDs was phony but I didn't realize to what lengths they would go to deceive the public. It was like a conspiracy to pull the wool over our eyes--hell, it WAS a conspiracy, damn them all to bloody hell!

You can believe I'll be watching that Bill Moyers special and I'll give a heads-up to everyone on my e-mail list too.

64. This kind of response continues to baffle me.
Why does not responding to a thread at DU translate into not caring or not forwarding the information? I cannot possibly respond to every single thing that I read, that touches me or that I forward.

Please don't be so discouraged. Perhaps a lack of response doesn't indicate people don't care. Perhaps they are too busy doing something with it.

I promise to come back and praise every new thing I learn from the doc.

...Bah, I sound caustic. Peace. Here is my problem in short because yes, you are right. I scanned through the description, and saw nothing that appeared new. In fact, I felt baited.

I'm I the only one who dropped into the "Bush lied and the media helped him do it." title, looking for detail on how Moyers lays down Bush as a macabre play-write and strategist? I have thought slap-happy actor all this time. I was a misunderestimateer of the Decider? ... I'm happy to see PBS do this, and it deserves FP, but I'm sorry if my blink reaction is that 'this is all so 2004' for the regular DU type.

that many have learned and DO care. I live in a very red state, and know of many repugs who wised up. May have bought the lies before the war, but not now.

Of course it's too little, too late for Iraq, but it may bode well for dems in 2008.

10. cooperation
It wasn't just the media that was complicit. Congress was bought off via earmarks and the threat of swiftboating. The public bought into the war once they realized no sacrifices would be exacted of them, and saw that life would be business as usual. Our potential allies were bought off with promises of free trade, aid dollars, etc. I would still love to know what junior did to get Blair's cooperration during this folly; must have been a whopper.

kept him in the WH and covered up for EVERY CRIME OF OFFICE his administration has been committing since day one.

And all the while they drew targets on anyone who spoke out against him and opposed his leadership.

And still do to this day.

I think it was, a few days ago and put a big 'sticky' on my desktop to remind me to watch on the 25th. The problem is, as always, this will probably just die on PBS. Moyers does some great stuff you just never hear about on MSM. We, of course, all knew this kind of thing was going on, but never saw anyone actually put it all together like this and put it on tv..looking forward to watching it.. but I have no illussions this will make it to mainstream viewership..after all, how many of these people are going to admit on their own networks and front pages how they're hands are as bloody as the administration's.

Good lord god. I tell ya, the rwingers are so desparate for war they'll do anything to get that war started. righties have never forgiven the Left for supposedly costing this country a glorious military victory in 'Nam. But history will prove the Left correct once again. Bush lied. People died and are dying for nothing over there.

And newspapers were worried about being out of step with the truth? What planet are these asswipes on? Liberal media my ass. The kid gloves approach with Ronnie and now being complicit in mass murder shows that horrible myth is nothing more than a marketing ploy by the right.

42. Bill Moyers and Sy Hersh represent what the Press Should Be Doing...
You don't hear either yelling and screaming, accepting at face value whatever the Bush Administration is feeding the rest of the Press, and they actually investigate claims by the government to determine if they are in fact true.

Imagine what kind of government we would have today if the rest of the Press had acted like Moyers and Hersh, and challenged this Administration to prove the truth of what they said and did.

The Press will take a big hit when people look back at the disaster Bush has made of things and say how did this happen?

His seriousness is not echoed by corporate media. But yet we know the truth here, and find it hard to believe how lacking a large percentage of this country is.

This has been a scandal where the American public took a role. I suppose it's the first time this has ever happened. The modern scandal was delivered by conservative spin doctors. And the American public was massaged by advertising to believe what they were told, no matter what.

So here we are. All I can say is, they may have the guns and money, but we have the time.

The drumbeats of war are pounding, and those freaks are sitting there giggling like schoolgirls with a crush on their teacher.

57. Rating friend, ratings. War is good for ratings.
Ratings = cash.

Thanks for the reminder, Bill is right of course.

It's too damn bad the media will never be held accountable in a civil action of sorts? Hey, I wonder if Cindy Sheehan can sue Knight-Ridder? ;)

58. Be sure to invite friends, especially the unsuspecting.
C'mon, we've all got a few friends busy scurrying through the rat maze, bombarding themselves with MSM, who have yet to grasp the full truth.

Here's what I'm saying to those few: Please come hang out with me and some other buddies to watch an interesting show on PBS about the media on April 25. I'll make some fresh salsa and chips and killer homemade chocolate cake.

I won't mention to them they'll be in roomful of people who, by and large, know what's happening in the world. We'll watch them for signs of disbelief followed by horror. If we spot that, we'll stick around after the show to ease those interested into some good websites, magazines, books and films. With a little luck, we'll send one or two home with a few nuggets of truth.

People want to keep their faith in the press intact. Remember your own horror when you really, truly, got it? When you first knew the MSM had rolled over and was playing dead while you watched bellies being scratched for being good? Remember that sick feeling in your own belly? I remember the "scripted" remark, too. Way before Gannon.

Now we have a TV network, kept open largely by people like us, airing one of the last standing journalists' report on the debacle. I wouldn't dream of missing it.

Remember to ease the unsuspecting into this with gentleness and chocolate cake. They have been good Americans, they just made the mistake of trusting their government when it promised to serve and protect them.

LOTS of chocolate cake.

60. A big red flag was raised for me....
when Bush early on in his speeches (aka lies) said that Iraq had unmanned aerial drones that can reach the USA carrying nuclear wepaons and just before he said this I had a chance to read the declassified section of the NIE that stated the exact opposite of this. Bush Lied People Die!

65. Sadly there is a very very small minority of journalists who will go down in history...
as exceptional in their work and exalted in their values from this time period.

67. Yup. The same "pack mentality" that attacked Gore kicked in again
Only this time, it was even more insidious.

And the consequences are over a half million dead, a ruined reputation for America, destruction of centuries old legal rights - and even less security than the day this story starts on.

Way to go, Washington press corps.

The few honest brokers with a soap box we have left are national treasures and I for one will support them in any way I can in these dark times above everything else. Bill Moyers is one of those as is Kucinich, Conyers, Gore, Clark, Ritter, Moore, and a slim few others like Skinner and other progressive bloggers. Bill Moyers has a much better soap box than many that preach to the choir (and I do not underestimate the immense value of that), but Bill Moyers can speak to a much larger audience and very few even on the right distrust him....So I can't wait to hear what he has to say even though most of us here in the choir figured it out long, long ago and already know what he is going to say.
