This asshole bishop, with his insistence on playing a recording of church bells EVERY half hour, including at night, seems to think so.

2. I remember a church that used to sound bells on the hour
as though the tower was a giant grandfather clock. It wasn't terribly obtrusive nor was it terribly loud. It was a real bell, fairly low pitch.

However, this asshole really crossed a line. Most cities have noise ordinances and his bells were in violation of them during the night.

4. Now this is what the common law holds as a nuisance
And the neighbors are well within their rights to abate that nuisance.

6. Every half hour?
And even at night? If it was next to me he'd be well advised to put the recording on a small flash drive...because a record or even a cd would be extremely uncomfortable when I shoved it up his ass! :grr:

7. For a Bishop that is Freedom of relgion and Freedom of Speach.
So, yes, there is a right.

Talk to your neighbors. Have as many as you can call the police everytime he plays the bells and complain of noise.

Check for noise ordnances in your city. I am sure that you can find one he is in violatio of.

8. the 1st Amendment is only a claim against government power.
It does not give someone a "right" to piss off the neighbors. Someone should take this big church bell and shove it up the pious one's ass.
