Curtis Media President/COO says “once Rush and Sean Hannity went under the same syndication roof, and Clear Channel controlled the table, we fully anticipated a torturous negotiation for a new contract” going into 2010. Instead – “there was no negotiation at all, just a letter.” That’s not a new tactic – Rush’s original syndicator EFM Media could play hardball, too. What is intriguing is that Clear Channel itself doesn’t own any talk stations in either Raleigh or Greensboro (see the next story). Curtis has apparently known for some time that it would have to replace Rush in middays on WPTF, Raleigh (680) and the regional trimulcast based at WSJS, Winston-Salem (600). Zachary says they’ll build a local show that “services the 94% of our market population who don’t listen to Rush Limbaugh.” Look for an announcement by December 1.
