Funniest anti-Halloween rant I've seen so far.

The Christian Broadcasting Network has caved in to scoffers and mockers and scrubbed a blog post which explained the dangers of Halloween - specifically, that "most of the candy sold during this season has been dedicated and prayed over by witches", and that this is a time of "sex with demons" and "rape and molestation of adults, children and babies", among much else.

The post was by Kimberly Daniels and taken from Charisma magazine, although much of the skeptical reaction has been at the expense of CBN's president, Pat Robertson. Regarding Halloween as demonic is common among Charismatic and neo-Pentecostal churches (and Evangelicals in general are not very keen on the celebration), and it is no surprise to read that she has links with C. Peter Wagner. It is interesting, though, to see elements of conspiracy theory, harking back to do the debunked "Satanic panics" of the 1980s.

I find it more disturbing than funny, though, because I know these people first-hand. That this crap continues is a crying shame.

The author is right to reference the "Satanic Panics" of the 1980's and stress that it's not just the Christian fundies who believe this stuff. While a great many people come to their fears of satanic influences at Halloween through involvement in fundamentalist churches, belief in satanic acts perpetrated around Halloween is also extremely common among people creating recovered memories of abuse, which is its own type of cult. Yes, a lot of recovered memory addicts are Christian fundies. However, the other huge group involved in abuse memory recovery are the left-leaning, often New Agey types who consider themselves "feminists" but who are fixated on the concept of women and children as victims.

If you go to recovered memory discussion forums this time of year, you will see post after post of people reporting terror of the full moon, fear of being "called back" to the cult, and "memories" of being raped in satanic rituals during this time of year. Many of these people are staunch liberals.

This recovered memory discussion forum, for example, (http://www.twhj.org/cgi/discus/discus.cgi?pg=topics) has multiple boards for discussion of ritual abuse (lots of discussion of October and Halloween on these). It also has specific boards for Christian, feminist, and alternative spirituality. If you spend some time reading here, you will see that the liberals may even outnumber the fundies.

Even here at DU, you will see the recovered memory crowd come out to defend their beliefs from time to time, although they usually stop short of admitting their satanic ritual abuse "memories" and any related issues around Halloween.
