JOHNSTON, Iowa -- Top Republican legislative leaders are urging Gov. Chet Culver to reopen contract negotiations with unions representing state workers as a way of cutting into state budget shortfalls.
Senate Minority Leader Paul McKinley notes that the workers' contract includes benefit increases and allows step increases within their pay grades. He says overall that amounts to more than a 7 percent pay and benefit increase.
Speaking Friday on public television's "Iowa Press," McKinley and House Minority Leader Kraig Paulsen urged Culver to convince workers they can save jobs and provide the public with services by taking pay cuts.
Culver has met with union leaders and says more meetings are in the works, but he hasn't formally asked to reopen contract negotiations.
