Live MSNBC online - P2P video streaming
Edited on Fri Oct-16-09 10:57 AM by LVZ
http://www.lasvegasmixx.com/tvu-channels.html?msnbc">

Although MSNBC has video clips of their shows available after a few hours delay,
there is another option for viewing "live" MSNBC online.

The site link (click on image) above requires the TVU Networks P2P plugin and only
works with Internet Explorer and Firefox in Windows (not available yet for Linux).

BTW, sometimes the video stream is down. If so, it will show a video test pattern.

1. I like this. There is no reason that Cable news could be available live over the intertubes
By creating a subnet to regional distribution points congestion could be minimized. Best part is I don't have to pay higher fees to cable thieves to watch the better news channels.

I don't have cable, but I have heard FOX is provided on the minimum subscription but the others require higher subscription fees.

24. Satellite TV networks make MSNBC a premium channel too ...
Dish Network requires the 200+ channel packages to get MSNBC - $38 per month
DirectTV requires the 150+ channel packages to get MSNBC - $30 per month

4. P2P advantage - more users = faster/higher quality video
Edited on Fri Oct-16-09 11:41 AM by LVZ
In traditional server-based video distribution, the server PC must supply all the bandwidth for distributing video to all "client PCs". Too many "clients" can overload the server (hub) causing video to become choppy and even crash the server.

With a P2P peer-to-peer video distribution network, each PC both receives and sends pieces of video to other PCs on the network. So, unlike server-based video, P2P video actually increases in quality and speed as more PCs access the same video stream.

6. Yes, the TVU Firefox plugin is buggy - it happened to me too, so ...
Edited on Fri Oct-16-09 12:09 PM by LVZ
Although I hate MS Internet Explorer, the TVU plugin for IE is a lot better than the one for Firefox.

If I remember right, your TVU plugin for Firefox was actually installed but you need to shutdown all Firefox tabs/windows.

Next, start up Firefox, then:

Click on Tools -> Add-ons -> Plugins -> TVU Web Player for Firefox -> Enable

Shutdown Firefox and restart it. If that does not work, do the same with:

Click on Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions -> TVU Web Player -> Enable

8. Well, then maybe I did NOT remember right, another option is ...
It is too bad that TVU networks chose not to make standard Firefox plugins like everyone else.

Perhaps the TVU Firefox plugin must be "run/executed" while Firefox is closed.

To do that, instead of "installing" the TVU Firefox plugin, download it (save to file) instead.

Next, close Firefox.

Find and run (execute) the downloaded plugin file. After it has finished installing,

Start up Firefox, then:

Click on Tools -> Add-ons -> Plugins -> TVU Web Player for Firefox -> Enable

Just to be on the safe side, shutdown Firefox again, restart Firefox,

Go to http://www.lasvegasmixx.com/tvu-channels.html?msnbc AND HOPE THAT IT FINALLY WORKS.

9. Support for Apple MacIntosh ...
I don't think that there is a TVU web plugin for Apple computers but a TVU standalone player can be downloaded:

21. Firefox 3.0 or Firefox 3.5?
I was using Firefox 3.5.x when I installed the TVU plugin. As someone else mentioned, I also had some problems with actually getting the Firefox plugin to install. I have read elsewhere that some folks with Windows Media Player 11 had problems but not those with WMP 9.

Which Firefox version worked for you? Which version of Windows Media Player do you have installed?

I finally did get the Firefox TVU plugin to work with Firefox 3.5.3 and WMP 11, but I certainly wish that TVU Networks had done a bit more testing/debugging of their plugin with various versions of Firefox and WMP.

11. One usage caveat: click on blue STOP button before ...
I found that it is a good practice to click on the center STOP button before closing a browser tab or window. Otherwise, the TVU video stream can sometimes get stuck.

Since I am not a subscriber, I don't know if this paid feature is for web players or only for the TVU standalone player.

23. video / audio sync problems?
I tried that link but for some reason the video and audio got out of sync. When I used mPlayer, it was badly out of sync. When I used Windows Media Player 11, it was much better but still slightly out of sync.

22. A few other tips ...
http://www.lasvegasmixx.com/tvu-channels.html?msnbc

For going into FULLSCREEN mode, click on the right boxed arrow on the control at the bottom or simply double-click on the video. To go back to normal menu mode, double-click again or press ESC.

Besides MSNBC, there are quite a few "live" channels include ABC, CBS, FOX, and SyFy. All the American broadcasts seem to be on Eastern Time.

The yellow boxes on the menu are "classic tv" (old) movies and tv programs. The red menu boxes are Chinese broadcasts.

27. Live CNN and FAUX NEWS are also available.
Edited on Sun Oct-18-09 06:17 PM by Las Vegas Mixx
http://www.lasvegasmixx.com/tv.html">

Thanks for the interest in our free non-commercial web site. I also set up a page to view CNN and Faux News "live" plus easy links to all the archived video feeds from the major American TV networks.

None of these video feeds require the TVU (Windows only) plugin. ABC, CBS, NBC, and FOX archived video feeds (clips and whole episodes) install their own web video plugins.

You can try them out here:

http://www.lasvegasmixx.com/tv.html
http://www.lasvegasmixx.com/tv2.html

The first link is more intuitive, but access to live CNN and FAUX NEWS is sporadic.
The second link has somewhat more reliable live video feeds.
