Homeless Get 700 Gourmet Meals After Mistake

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ― A mix-up over dates ended up sending 700 gourmet meals intended for the Presidents Cup to a San Francisco soup kitchen.

It started Wednesday morning, when city event coordinator Martha Cohen tried to find out what smelled so good at one of the tournament tents in Harding Park. Lunch, the caterer told her. But the golf event wasn't scheduled to start until the following day. Someone had mixed up the dates.

So Cohen called St. Anthony's Foundation, in the Tenderloin, and by noon, the homeless were feasting on a menu that included parmesan crusted cod with linguini, carved mesquite-smoked beef brisket, parsley buttered potatoes, Caesar salad and shrimp pasta salad.

2. That's great! Unless they were told they probably had no idea what they were eating.
I know I wouldn't!

3. Homeless what?
Is it really that hard to include the word "people"?

We are invisible enough as it is....

7. We can't be humanizing the homeless now
That might make some people feel guilty.

Just in case >>--> :sarcasm:

8. .
You are right. They should have included "people" in the headline. I just did a copy and paste of the headline. This is something that I will pay better attention to in the future, and add it myself if they fail to do it.

Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

11. Thank you so much, Kadie! I really appreciate that!
Here's a quote for your consideration and future use:

p. 30 In the research of Fisk and her colleagues, people were asked how different social groups are viewed by their society. When asked a series of questions about social warmth and the competency of different social and ethnic groups, the answers clustered around four emotional responses: pity, envy, pride, and disgust. For example, people routinely reach to the homeless with disgust. This is puzzling enough. You might have thought people would pity the homeless, empathize with their position, and feel sorry for them. Not at all. And in a functional MRI study, when study participants were presented with pictures of members from each social and ethnic group, the medial prefrontal cortex--the site that registers the potential for an object's social action--popped for all but one group: the homeless. The homeless maybe seen as human, but not fully so, not as social actors.14

9. Awesome!
If anyone deserves it, it's those people. Hopefully it brought some satisfaction to them for just a little while.
