Los Angeles DA: ‘About 100%’ of medical marijuana dispensaries are illegal

In spite of a law on California books for over a decade which allows the sale of medical cannabis to properly licensed patients, the district attorney in Los Angeles County is preparing an all-out legal assault against the "vast majority" of dispensaries.

"Hundreds of dispensaries operate under a 1996 voter initiative that allowed medical marijuana use, and a state law that allows for collective growing of marijuana," NBC Los Angeles reported. "But based on a state Supreme Court decision last year, Cooley has concluded that over-the-counter sales are illegal. Most if not all of the dispensaries in the state operate on that basis."

"The vast, vast, vast majority, about 100%, of dispensaries in Los Angeles County and the city are operating illegally, they are dealing marijuana illegally, according to our theory," Cooley said, according to The Los Angeles Times. "The time is right to deal with this problem."

That "problem" -- over the counter sales of marijuana to licensed patients -- accounted for some $18 million in tax revenue for the state last year, reported The Christian Science-Monitor, during a time when California is facing the greatest budgetary challenges in its history.

1. I don't get it
Especially when cigarettes and alcohol are legal. This makes no sense. Legalized marijuana at the federal level would save millions in policing costs and generate significant tax revenue.

5. L.A. County has a corruption problem that rivals
Miami-Dade or Broward. We should challenge Florida to a pay-off.

8. It's a lazy, cowardly fuck going after low-hanging fruit.
Seriously, in 25 words or less, that's it.

When I think "crime," I think New York City and Los Angeles.

So this tough guy is going to shut down the "100% illegal" medical marijuana companies to boost his arrest stats.

That's it, plain and simple.

10. Yes, I will be voting no on his ass next time he's on the ballot.
Stop and think about this for a moment. First, we have proposition 215 where the people of California spoke and he's saying he's going to ignore the will of the people (how anti-American of him). Secondly, we have President Obama who's stated he wasn't going to use the federal government to thwart the will of the people on what he said should be a state's issue.

So this dipshit doesn't have the state or the federal government behind him. So what other reasons would he have? Well.....there's always using his office to inject his ideologies onto others which puts him in the same company as Saddam Hussein, Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin, etc. Or more than likely he's accepted bribes from corporate and/or religious interests.

I think this anti-American piece of shit needs to be investigated.

7. what a great use of taxpayer money!
:sarcasm:

If the DA doesn't have anything better to do than prosecute medical cannabis dispensaries, they need their operating budget trimmed.

9. "they are dealing marijuana illegally, according to our theory"
I wonder what that theory is, that lets him assume that 100% of dispensaries are operating illegally. I'll bet it's a theory about creating an issue to get his name in the newspapers. Most District Attorneys are political animals that exist only to seek higher and higher office and would do or say anything to get what they want.

Just another suit using his guns against sick people and THEIR CAREGIVERS, while he looks the other way in regards to his "higher" friends in the business community.

13. Yeah, Cooley, smart move. Go after medical marijuana use.
For many people, it's the closest thing to medical care they can get these days.
