A speech that says basically:
Afghanistan as a country has resisted modernity with all its might. As a poor country, it's always needed/asked for help, and yet resisted help from all who tried to bring it....so Every family in Afghanistan will receive a one-time lump-sum payment equivalent to $1k (US), and a weapon for family protection. You all can open businesses, build schools, buy land, whatever..with that money, but other than purely humanitarian aid in desperate times of need, we're DONE with your country.
get your shit together and modernize..or not..it's up to you NO visas will be issued to any Afghan for emigration purposes anymore. If you want your country to be isolated and backwards, it's your choice now. Only after proof-positive evidence that Afghanistan wants to join the 21st century is presented, will the west again open up to you. ...................................... Something that many people forget it this.. East Germany and the Iron Curtain countries were totally closed off for decades, as was China, and yet those countries eventually came around. There is a cycle to these things, with or without wars.
If Afghanistan wants to align with the taliban or al qaeda, it's their choice, and "we" cannot "kill them all"..we can only engage in another futile insurgency/civil war that cannot ever be "won". Sending our soldiers and emptying out our treasury to have these soldiers sit in mountainside aeries. scouring the rocks for ghost-adversaries is insane.
We don't even know what "winning" looks like. What would a "win" be? Re-installing the oil-man Karzai as mayor-of-Kabul, so we can funnel more money through him? Having our soldiers build schools, only to have them blown up or to have teachers executed for daring to teach?
Everything we build, can easily be destroyed.
The Afghans are at war with themselves, and we cannot stop them from fighting each other. If they choose to grow poppy instead of food, can we really stop them? If they can get "free food" AND grow poppy as a cash crop, why should they change their ways.
Some say it's "abut the women"..well it's not going to change just because a few thousand Americans show up and say "Stop doing that".
There are just some fights we need to stay out of. We are NOT the "boss-of-them". We can get upset at their treatment of women, but until their own society rises up and says "we have had enough", nothing will change for them.
We can monitor their entrance into our country, and we can be vigilant, but it's just not up to us to change their way of life, especially if they don;t want it changed.
