A food shortage has left shelves bare at the Salvation Army Chandler Corps’ food bank.

Demand for food has increased greatly over the last year, and donations have not kept pace, according to the nonprofit. Without donations, services to the needy could be cut back, the group warned in a statement Friday.

LONG BEACH - On Friday morning, families visiting the Salvation Army offices on Spring Street looking for foodstuffs had to leave hungry.

For the first time since the food pantry started passing out groceries regularly in 2005, it was forced to close its doors.

While the agency continued to offer its other services and forms of aid, including vouchers for necessities, Friday was a dark day.

And the story is similarly bleak all around town.
