Anyone have an opinion on 2012?
Edited on Thu Oct-01-09 10:35 PM by CoffeeCat
No, no--not the political election...the end of the world, silly!

I guess I'm late to the table, but I just saw the trailer for the 2012 movie
that comes out in November. See way-cool trailer here: http://www.whowillsurvive2012.com/

I had no idea that there is a ton of speculation (unscientific, of course) about the world
ending in December of 2012.

On the movie Web site, it invites visitors to search "2012" and discover the truth.

Interesting!

Anyone have any insight or opinion about 2012...the movie or the planet being destroyed?

The movie trailer is awesome!

Did the Mayans actually predict that the world will end on this day?

Or did they just stop the calendar at that date?

Thanks for any info.

And this is part of the millenarian bullshit we have every so often.

...It's a disaster film with some "ancient history" within the story line.

That always makes things more exciting.

And that movie trailer looks impressive. I hated "Armageddon". In fact, we walked out, but
if someone can make an epic disaster film that looks great and has believable effects--that would
be an terrific movie!

50. It seems made for IMAX
. . . although I have to wonder if they sustain that level of destruction for the whole movie and if they did, could anyone stand it for an entire movie. Did they cram all the CG into the promos and the rest of the movie is crap?

Sadly, I'm afraid this is just the beginning of end-of-the-world mania. . . Trying to remember how long we had to suffer through millenium hype; at least when that fizzled, we seemed to forget about it pretty quickly and move on to the next fad.

I have to say that 12/21/2012 is intriguing, especially since we're due for a flip-flopping of the magnetic poles and also near the end of Kali Yuga, which is also supposed to end about the same time as the Mayan calendar. Of course, the Hindus say it'll just be a matter of waking up and realizing what's what until we get bored and decide to start the cycle all over again.

Damn. If it's true, it would be a real pisser, wouldn't it? . . . like coming to the end of a favorite teevee series and being told it was all in someone's head. Bleagh. Alan Watts describes the cycle very nicely, but seems to skip over the part where we kick ourselves in the collective arse for subjecting ourselves to such a miserable bunch of crap at the end. :P

21. It is all a total misunderstanding of the Mayan calendar
December 22, 2012 CE - A lot of doomtalk has sprung up lately around the ancient Mayan Calendar and how it'll be completing its cycle on this date. Mayan Armageddon is nothing to sneer at, either. At that moment, everything in the world that humans are fond of, from darling Fluffy romping in the yard to the new espresso maker on the kitchen counter will make like a Fox TV special and attack their unsuspecting owners. The forces of nature will get a go at us next and then big bits of space debris will have a shot, too. In the end, humanity will be quite thoroughly heinie-whipped for being so very sinful and impure.

The End Times aficionados are so entranced by the thought of this whole new mythology they can pull apocalypses out of, that they've entirely overlooked the itsy-bitsy factoid that 2012 isn't the Mayan date for end of the world, at all. That's not scheduled until sometime in the fiftieth century. 2012 will only mark the end of a calendrical cycle, and as such, a pretty good time to party...well, unless you're an End Times obsessive.
More choices of end of the world prophecies, past and future, than you can count: http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Oracle/9941/infinity2.html

But didn't use them for transport. They even had a missive network of raised roads all through the Yucatan.

I always wondered if it was because they had no decent animals for pulling carts and cargo.

a paradigm shift in perspectives on a global scale. It can be a spiritual shift as well as a shift in the natural realm too to correlate with that according to some people.

The 2012 reference is to the Mayan calendar, which ends on December 21, 2010. The Mayans created a perfect earthly and astronomical calendar, which predicted solar and lunar eclipses, comets, supernovas, etc. well after the demise of Mayan civilization. On December 21, 2012, the Mayans have discovered, and this is confirmed by modern astronomers, that the Solar System, including the Earth, will pass the galactic equator and the black hole, therein. The speculation, from what I understand, is that the poles will reverse, the Earth's plates will violently move and massive destruction will be reaped upon the World.

And also according to the Mayans, the right-wing nut jobs will be cast into a lake of fire and brimstone, where Rupert Murdoch, Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck, shall be tormented day and night forever and ever.

God Bless

37. This is what will happen if Sarah Palin becomes President.
The Mayans predicted it.

My ability to translate Mayan Hieroglyph is a little rusty but a rough translation is as follows:

...And the world will be in much turmoil and in the North the masses will be frightened. They will flock to the temple of the God of ignorance, Kul Ad, and they will drink of his water which shall be of the color of the Rose. And it shall come to pass that there will be gnashing of teeth and renting of fabric and they will speak in tongues and misspell their signs and shout of death panels and from among them will rise a great leader whose ignorance surpasses all others and her name shall be Sa Rah. And Sa Rah will lead them to new heights of ignorance and wreak destruction on the air and they will poison the water and kill the little creatures of the earth and the Gods will be angry and they will be ashamed of the people and they shall destroy the earth to hide their shame.

Or something like that.

the mayan's just said that the "world as we KNOW it" will end.

If you believe that the world is pretty much run by vile, evil greedy bastards....that doesn't sound so bad that 'THAT' should end, does it?

Of course, it could also mean that we are sucked up into a big black hole, which will lead us into another dimension, where all the *rules* are changed and then we are really f*cked!

But, hey, surprise me! I don't have ANY control over much of anything anyway! I was born and everything from 'there on out' was/is just a joyride! Wheeeee! *snort*

Oh yeah, and the President is black. Come on, we finally get a black president and Hollywood has to go all Morgan Freeman with the movie. We all know how that steaming Hollywood load DEEP IMPACT turned out.

55. It is the peak year for baby boomers
retiring.
Historicly, when the number of people retiring each year goes down, the stock market goes up.When the number of people retiring goes up the stock market goes down.
Starting in 2007 the number of people retiring each year has risen exponentially. And the stock market has been falling ever since.
After 2012 the number of people retiring every year pretty much levels out.For the next ten years.

What happens when people retire? They start selling their stocks to fund their retirement.
What happens when a whole shit load of people start selling something? The law of supply and demand kicks in and prices for go down.

Anyone ever wonder why they are trying to destroy social security? To keep people from retiring in an attempt to prop up the market.
Ever wonder why health care is being brought up as an issue? Because they know medicare/medicaid is about to be swamped with retiree's.

Hang out to your hats people. Its gonna be a long time before the economy recovers.

Unless someone comes up with something new and real, it's not interesting anymore.

58. I found the trailer both appalling (shades of 9/11) and puerile ( a ride in a theme park).

60. And of course 12/21/12 would be a friday.
Just when you're starting to look forward to the weekend. BOOM!!! The world ends. Why couldn't it end on a Monday? No one would have cared then.

63. Actually, there is a ton of scientific speculation, as well.

You might want to see this: http://www.realmovienews.com/reviews/discs/3004

But I must ask (since you had no idea that there was a ton of speculation regarding Dec. 21, 2012) do you not have the Discovery Network. :hi:

They've been running documentaries regarding the Mayan long-count calender and interviews with real scientists, climatologists, religious folks (both nutty and not) all year. :)

68. I already corrected my error.
But, yes, there has been some scientific speculation.

Mostly on the level of natural disasters and global warming and solar flares and not keyed on the exact date of Dec. 21, 2012, but keyed upon turbulent times in the years of 2008 through 2015.

71. Then I guess this guy's not a scientist.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michio_Kaku

Because he certainly has some theories on it.

http://www.theusreport.com/the-us-report/dr-michio-kakuthe-physicist-who-should-have-a-tv-show.html

Granted, his is only - guess what - SPECULATION, but I think I'm going to listen a little more intently to a trained theoretical scientist who has written numerous papers on the String Theory than to someone on a blog.

72. Kaku's always been a hack.
Particularly when it came to trying to block Cassini.

But even Kaku isn't speculating anything about Mayan prophecies, or end of the world or anything of the sort.

He's just saying a solar cycle will peak in 2012.

There's going to be a presidential election in 2012. And the summer olympics. That doesn't mean the Mayans predicted it.

79. You'd think you'd "feel" something not right, were that 2 yrs away, you know? Like when a bad storm
approaches. I don't feel it. And I still remember when Y2K was "the end." It was something before that. Guess we'll see soon.

That movie looks killer, though!
