Is there a bigger waste of tax money than abstinence education?
First of all it doesn't work.

Second of all, its imposing values that are from one faction of society on everyone.

Third, with all the things teenagers need to learn about sex, why on earth should they be taught "don't do it"?

:wtf:

After weeks of railing against the price tag of health-care reform, Senate Republicans managed to bond over pumping up the budget for one aspect of health-care reform yesterday: abstinence-only education. Proposed by Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch, the amendment reinstates $50 million in funding for abstinence-only education that President Obama had previously removed in his budget proposal earlier this year. Committee Republicans were joined by Democrats Blanche Lincoln and Kent Conrad in voting up the measure, which passed 12-11.

26. No, it's easy! Just don't tell them about sex, and they won't do it!
Right? I mean, how can they do it if they don't know about it?

...right?

(I don't really need to use the "sarcasm" tag here do I? You all knew this was sarcastic, right?)

9. You mean like 95% of our defense budget?
Or something smaller, like just the war in Iraq...

But yeah, kids are more likely to get in trouble with sex if they don't know anything about it. "Abstinence only" is worse than useless, it's actually harmful.

12. No. How much money does it take to say, "Don't do it?"
The whole thing is ridiculous. Maybe Carrie Prejean will be the new spokesperson and she can tell everyone to save themselves for marriage.

20. I can't think of many
Although Congress giving itself a raise is one of the few things I can think of. Oh and giving Pakistan a few billion in aid. And continuing the war in Iraq.

Let's face it. Our government is very good at wasting money. Though, I'll ultimately agree that abstinence education is the stupidest fucking thing our government spends money on.

21. It could be done for a few thousand dollars..
Give each teenage girl an aspirin tablet and tell her to hold it firmly between her knees.

I would put the various wars on relatively equal footing, the war on teenage sex, the war on drugs, the war in Afghanistan and the war in Iraq, all colossal wastes of money.

25. In a poll earlier this week, a majority of DU thought the age of consent
should be 18 years old.

If most people think kids shouldn't be having sex until they are 18, isn't someone teaching abstinence?
