Mccain is just about BROKE - only $5.2 million cash on hand with $1.8 million debt

The media has been calling it the "McCain Meltdown."

Senator McCain, favorite of pundits everywhere and beloved media 'maverick,' was assumed -- at least by those inside the beltway -- as the heir apparent to W's dunce cap crown. But as he shuffles through his notes trading one extreme position for another even more extreme position, McCain has been bleeding support. Worse, his drops in the polls haven't come because he's been holding back on campaigning. In fact, he's spent most of his cash already. Nine months from the primaries, McCain is raising less money and running through what he raises faster than his opponents.

From January through March, McCain raised about $13 million. But he spent $8.4 million, leaving him with just under $5.2 million at the end of the quarter. The campaign reported $1.8 million in debt, as well.

The figures underscore the difficult political position McCain is in as he struggles to restore some energy to his bid for the White House. Once the heavy favorite in the GOP field, McCain now trails Giuliani by double figures in some national polls. He also lags former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson, who has not announced whether he will run.

6. Good pundits ...

Good pundits generate advertising revenue. There is no reward for insightful punditry.

7. Yet McCain still does ok in the gen elec polls
Edited on Sun Apr-15-07 07:13 PM by skipos
RECENT LA TIMES POLL:
McCain 42%, Clinton 45%, CLINTON WINS BY 3%
McCain 40%, Edwards 44%, EDWARDS WINS BY 4%
McCain 40%, Obama 48%, OBAMA WINS BY 8%

RECENT RASMUSSEN:
Clinton (47%) McCain (46%) CLINTON WINS BY 1%
Edwards (47%) McCain (38%) EDWARDS WINS BY 9%
Obama (46%) McCain (42% )OBAMA WINS BY 4%

I wouldn't celebrate the derailing of the Weathervane McCain Train yet, especially if a weak gen. elec. candidate like Hillary gets nominated.
