And when one of them asks me "you want the same people who bungled Katrina to run healthcare?!?" I tell them, "oh goodness no! I hope the Republicans are never given such responsibility again!"

In fact, I am kind of shocked that anyone with half a brain could use such an argument without noting the inherent problem in that statement. Then again, they also tend to think FOX is news, Colbert is a conservative, Ted Nugent is talented, and Rush Limbaugh is funny, so perhaps they don't quite qualify for the "half a brain" statement.
