Acorn May Cut Voter-Registration Work

By BRODY MULLINS and JAKE SHERMAN
Community-organizing group Acorn said Thursday it was considering quitting its voter-registration work amid a growing political storm over its activities, a move that could hurt Democrats at the polls.

The repukes have had a resounding success taking down ACORN. This is bad news for dems and worse news for people in poverty.

1. They are not the only community organizers in the country you know
There are countless other groups that register voters and do what ACORN does, only better.

ACORN, btw, doesn't do anything to make sure that the people they register actually vote on election day.

Typical hand wringer Oh Noes post.

2. ACORN is by far the largest community orgainizing entity in the country
It's one of the largest when it comes to voter registration and it provides much needed services to an underserved population. Should ACORN shut down, it would be a big loss.

3. Typical hang wringer Oh Noes post
I knew people in the Obama campaign and they all shared the same view of ACORN: useless.

They're sloppy, careless and don't do the follow up work that is needed to make sure that newly registered voters vote.

4. yes, the organization has problems- most large organizations do.
but ACORN provides valuable services that no other organization can currently match.

Typical callous and ignorant post.

5. if ACORN wasnt a threat, they wouldn't be targeted so heavily...
think about it.

The Republicans are going to do anything and everything they can to bollix up the 2010 Census. This is the Census that will provide the counts in key districts that will show the growth of non-white populations tipping what is now the majority white ones. The 2010 Census properly done will tip Texas Democratic because it will force redistricting.

7. Redistricting in Texas is not a good thing...
...since republicans will be drawing the lines.

15. not if the census forces the lines to be drawn
since minorities are involved, the Feds step in... It won't be a complete gerrymander.

6. Oh please
these are two different things.

The valuable services that they provide (which others can and do provide) have little to do with politics... the political services they provide have moved from "next to worthless" to "worse than worthless".

Now would be a great time for them to step back from one and focus on the other.

9. So are we going to wring our hands or are we going to step up
and fill the gap?

10. Time To Focus on WHY ACORN Is Being Taken Down
It's another of the ongoing rushpublican moves to disenfranchise minority and poor voters. This is no different than the voter ID laws they've been pushing through state legislatures. They know that these people will vote overwhelmingly Democratic in some key states. There's a similar attack going on against La Raza and Hispanic organizations. The GOOP knows the only way they can come close on the national level (close enough to steal an election) is to marganizalize the minority vote while energizing their bible thumping church buses.

This isn't an attack on President Obama as much as its an attack on poor people (many, unfortunately who are black)...hope they can intimidate these groups from voting and participating.

11. That explains the repukes but it doesn' explain the 80% support in defunding by Dems in both houses.

12. yeah I wonder why most DEMS supported defunding. Cowardice
perhaps?

personally, I don't think the defunding is a good thing. :(

13. Cowardice probably has a lot to do with it.
The filmakers were smart in choosing an issue "child prostitution" that is both indefensible and emotional.

The Democrats don't have the courage to get up and explain why funding shouldn't be stripped.
It is hard to explain in a soundbite how you can both be against the individual actions and for the organization.

14. It's Shellshock
When a shitstorm hits faux and hate radio, these reps phones ring off the hooks and the poutrage is both focused and very intense. We see too many Democrats who fear that shitstorm and either go hiding or placate the wingnuts with knee-jerk reactions. Be it condemning MoveOn or now this game, it's the fear of being identified with the target and trying to immunize themselves if the storm gets even deeper.

In short: they're chickenshits.
