Effing idiots in Central Florida get to decide if president's speech is "appropriate."
Edited on Fri Sep-04-09 02:15 PM by madfloridian
This area is fundamentalist hell with Southern Baptist churches on every corner, and people who are coming out of the woodwork as racist. They may have been there all along, but at least they were not out in public.

Since Bush came on the scene things changed, and now that Obama is president they are crawling out of their corners with their hatred and their Confederate flags flying.

Now according to the School Board of Polk County...each school gets to out guess the elected leader of our country and decide if what he is saying is appropriate. They stuck the word "age" in there so it would not look so effing racist.

Polk School Board Statement on Obama's Speech

Polk School District Protocol For President Obama's September 8 Speech

(September 4, 2009) The superintendent's office has announced its directive to schools regarding the broadcast of President Obama's September 8 speech.

A determination of whether the speech will be broadcast live in schools is a school-based decision and will be made by principals and teachers at individual schools. The content of the speech, which is to be released Monday by the White House, will be provided to school staffs so that they may determine if the content is appropriate based on students' ages, curriculum and class schedule considerations. The release of the content of the speech will allow schools to fully analyze the situation.

If schools decide to broadcast the speech live, schools will provide an opt-out provision for parents or guardians preferring that their children not view the speech. Students may be excused from participating and given an alternative activity if parents communicate to the school with their preference of opting-out. If a student indicates an objection at the time of the speech, an alternate activity will be provided.

The idiots and racists are coming out of the woodwork. They are actually saying that the content of the speech of the President of the United States might not be "appropriate."

They will let us all know later when they decide....if they will "allow" the president to talk to the students of Polk County, Florida.

1. I guess they forgot Florida went blue.
By some 200,000 people. Not by 500 when they stopped counting, but 200,000.

Always will be, I think.

Probably wouldn't go blue if they froze.

18. The fact that Tonjes said he got about equal calls pro and con
is a good sign.

There has been progress, but not enough. Southeastern students man the phones on issues, and they have the money and resources and radio and Fox backing.

in this "time of war", otherwise they're traitors.

The hypocrisy, it burns.

10. Just talked to someone in that county office.
It's the end of a long day, she tried to sound serious, but she cracked up when I said we just gave the world more fodder to laugh at us.

She tried, but she realizes they goofed.

I said thank god I am retired, and she laughed harder.

She said it's been a long day.

11. Ha ha, they are scared to death of the right wing. Here is more.
Yay for those of us who got through and had our say. The Tonjes mentioned below is quite intelligent, but I surely bet he felt like a fool today.

http://www.theledger.com/article/20090904/NEWS/909049984/1410?Title=Polk-School-District-to-Tape-Obama-Speech-Show-Later

"LAKELAND | Polk County is not immune to the national furor over President Barack Obama’s plans to speak Tuesday to classrooms across the country via closed-circuit television.

Angry parents on both sides of the issue lit up the phones Friday at School District headquarters, prompting officials to hastily draft a directive outlining how they plan to deal with the president’s address.

As of Friday afternoon, the plan is for school administrators and teachers to videotape the speech and show it at a later time. Decisions on when to replay the speech, or whether to show it at all, will be decided on a school-by-school basis.

“It’s likely they’ll review it Tuesday and show it later in the week,” said Bruce Tonjes, associate superintendent of school-based operations.

He said he fielded a constant flood of calls Friday, from parents adamant that the district not telecast Obama’s speech, and just as many parents who felt the president shouldn’t be censored."

16. Sad to say that I live in Polk County.
This does not surprise me at all. When I worked on the Obama campaign, some of the things people said when we called to ask for their support was not so nice.

20. I was watching Matthews tonight and some rightwinger was ranting about...
Edited on Fri Sep-04-09 08:37 PM by George II
...some rightwing idiots that were not allowed to speak in schools somewhere (I usually zone out when they speil, but I should pay more attention!!) as though this was a comparison - and I was screaming at the television "THIS IS THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES", not some fundy-idiot.

Reagan spoke to all students without content review, Bush I did so as well, Bush II tried, but failed (idiot that he was), so what's the big deal with Obama speaking about STAYING in school?

To me it's simply an attempt at Clinton-ing Obama and essentially castrating his administration. They started stonewalling the Clinton administration before he even took the oath, it looks like Obama is being more successful at beating it back (or the American people have finally woken up and realize the sham of the right) - we have to hope and pray he prevails over the shrinking minority of rightwing, as you put it, "effing idiots"!

22. Take time to read the comments after the School Board statement.

Here are two of the best:

"I was never prouder of my country than when we elected an intelligent, diplomatic man of color as President with seeming indifference toward discrimination. I have never been more ashamed of my country as I am now, when we let a fringe minority of bigots embarrass us with these stupid childish insinuations that somehow this President intends to harm us. Give me a freaking break!

And a great one:

"Let's not mince words...all this wailing is, for the most part, because he's black, and a great many of the goppers just cannot deal with that.

Oh sure, they babble incessantly about "socialism" and "fascism" and other stuff about which they know nothing, but the underlying reason for most of it is racism.

They didn't even go this crazy under Clinton, and they went really crazy in those years.

23. These
whiners would not have liked my Granddad. When I used to get whiny and cranky as a young child he used to say: Now don't be a tiresome child. That's what these crazies remind me of, very, very, very tiresome children. They hate that we have Democratic president and..oh noes......he's black! Christ....I agree with Harwood on MSNBC who said they are acting stupid and the question is if they are too stupid to be raising children. I agree with that statement completely!

24. OMG this state is SO embarrassing!!!!
And I'm in the part that turned the whole state blue. Seriously what is wrong with them?

This is in addition to the GOP crony-ism (as the Palm Beach Post put it) displayed by Crist when he appointed a lobbyiest BFF to fill Martinez's seat for the year and a half until the election. Oh! Nelson, our only Dem? He's part of "The Family". Ya know, that Jesus cult in D.C. that even the evangelical Christians think are crazy? Yup.

But then since Crist started running for Senate he has sold our state out over and over to developers and others who fill his campaign coffers.
