I ask you DUers, which is worse???

And we all now know about Don "Nappy-Headed Hos" Imus.
This whole episode has been utterly fascinating, from watching those who sprung to Imus' defense on the basis of free speech and his charity work, to those who see his detractors umbrage and his firing as "PC" gone amuck, to those who threw up smokescreens mouthed by FOX. And there have been the DUers who came forward with well-reasoned, thoughtful writings on language, race, and speech. I hope you all got a chance to read them all, as I have.
To be completely transparent in this discussion, I want to say that I am glad Don Imus was fired. He and his coworkers have a long history of truly disgusting, bigoted remarks, and I believe that there is no obligation for a tv/radio station or newspaper to carry that kind of speech. With prodding from the people who paid Imus' salary (the sponsors and the public), MSNBC made an internal decision they felt was right for their company. More power to them.
I want to focus on an issue that I have been disturbed by for years and was indirectly touched on by many DUers who, in their defense of Imus, talked about him not really being a bigot.
Which is worse? A bigot who says racist/sexist/homophic remarks because they (as disgusting as it is) truly believe those things or someone who plays a bigot and says racist/sexist/homophobic remarks because they garner ratings, large paychecks, and national prominence?
I have often wondered if the Anns and the Rushs and the Michaels and the Dons of radio/TV/punditry actually believe 99 percent of the shit they spew. I honestly don't know, though I have long suspected that many are nothing but master provocateurs hell bent on getting their piece of the hate industry gold rush.
About this I am certain, though: those who would feed the bigots of our country with their ugly remarks, who would give hatred validation and encourage the continuation of a mindset that should have died with the last century -- all in the pursuit of a dollar -- are the lowest form of life of all. Instead of being part of the solution to our country's problems, they set out chum for the bottomfeeders to gobble, making their money while pulling us one step further down the sewer. And I have nothing but the utmost contempt for those hucksters. At least a bigot -- as vile as they are -- are honest about themselves.
So, Don, (and Ann and Rush and Michael and...) which is it? Are you a bigot or a huckster?
On an aside, I heard a story last night from Bo Deitl (sp?) about how Imus was not a bigot and, in fact, had stopped by to pick up some kid -- an African-American kid -- on his way to his ranch. Hey Don, I dare you to look that child in the eyes and tell him or her that their Mom looks like a "nappy-headed ho" -- come on, I double dog dare you. I am willing to bet you wouldn't DREAM of saying something like that. If it's not okay to say to this child's face, then why the hell is it okay to say on the air? And why don't you learn a damn lesson about the ramifications of speech, while you're at it.
