Say It With Me: Ds Are The OVERWHELMING MAJORITY in the USA.
And, the majority rules.

So, fuck the Rs, the birthers and the rest of the racists. And FUCK the D pols who won't get on board with REAL health reform. Either lead, or get out of the way of the juggernaut.

1. We are a majority, but not an OVERWHELMING majority.
It's about 45 - 25 - 30 (at least imho). 45 liberal/progressive 25 nutjob/conservative and 30 apathetic/independent.

When the independents vote with us, we are overwhelming. When they sit out or split, it's a much closer race.

2. And with the Message Machine in the hands of the corporatists,
that crucial 30% are too often led astray.

4. It made a good story... first black President, young photogenic
versus old guy.

It sold a lot of airtime.

But now it's back to business. Not to mention that they need another horse race, so it's time to knock the new President off the pedestal.

5. Really? Gallup said this week that 30 states are
solidly D and only 4 states solidly R. Also, 7 other states are leaning D while only 1 other state is leaning R.

37 to 5? I'd say that's overwhelming.

9. After the 2004 election, would you have said that
the conservatives were "overwhelming" majority of Americans?

polls and elections are snapshots of an instant in time, and the political leaning of this country is more like a tide that ebbs and flows. And it isn't even "constant" with regard to every issue.

Liberals have often been associated with gun control.

I bet you all the money I have that an "overwhelming" majority of Americans do not want more gun control legislation.

And we can go through the entire list of liberal causes, some will get overwhelming support of the electorate, and many will not. I used gun control as a example, and don't want to debate the merits of it in this thread.

6. If true, that means we are a plurality, not a majority

8. Depends.
How many people that voted for Obama consider themselves "liberal".

Another point to consider, on the same night that elected Obama in an electoral landslide, but by a less than 10 % popular vote, "liberal" California passed prop H8.

Counting states as "Democratic" or "republican" based on something like the last election is very slippery.

If we did that, than the 2004 election made the country a solid Conservative nation, with almost NO liberal areas. But that wasn't true either.

I stand by my analysis.

12. I agree completely with your analysis.
Most people do not understand that the 'independent' and 'middle' of this country has been expanding and can ebb and flow greatly based on the latest hot issue of the day. Some are locked into their tribe, right or wrong, but that number is diminishing. You've made very good points and I thank you for that.

10. So are those who support gov't funded health care (public option or single-payer)
but that's not what the terrorists will yell.

11. According to the most recent data available
Edited on Fri Aug-07-09 06:11 PM by Venceremos
the USA has 72 million registered Democrats, 55 million registered Republicans, and 42 million people registered as Independents or with a third party. So in other words 72 million Democrats and 97 million registered with another party or independent. Not a majority.

And even if Dems were an "overwhelming" majority, age is the most significant factor in swinging an election. Voters 45 and older are the most reliable and large voting bloc. Scare them away from one party and you will swing an election.

The Dems can't just walk away from the health care debate since many elderly and middle aged people are concerned about the health care bill. If the Dems ram it through without getting a majority of old people on board they will lose future elections. And then where will health care be?
