Hiroshima: The Lost Photographs

Hiroshima: The Lost Photographs

Close to a decade ago, in Watertown, Massachusetts, a man was walking his dog on a rainy evening
when, amidst the garbage, he caught sight of a battered suitcase — full of photographs of a bombed
out Hiroshima.

August 6th, marks the 64th anniversary of Hiroshima.
On this occasion, Design Observer presents a unique slideshow of 100 photographs
from the ground in the days after the bombing at

1. Slide after slide of desolation. . .
The photographer searched for "what was left" to photograph it. Most have no people. There's one shot of a train station with people waiting. There's one shot of what looks like a bank. The people in that picture look like they're trying to conduct whatever business they can.

I wonder what happened to the photographer.

4. Was it the ultimate "nuclear test"...?
The photos seem to be focused on the devastation from a very studied eye. How the heat bent the rebar and made the concrete buckle...

...and the people? well, doesn't a nuclear blast just incinerate ALL life in it's path?

the ultimate in human evil to itself... regardless of politics or war or whatever, it is still horrific.

Never. Again.
Stop all the wars NOW!

5. Everything in a ??? mile radius is vaporized...
I hate even wasting the time to look this up, but here's a little ditty about how the devasttion and the bomb itself works...

Blast:
The rapid release of energy in an explosion creates a shock wave of overpressure. Very close to the centre of a nuclear explosion, overpressure is equivalent to several thousand pounds per square inch (psi). This is hundreds of times greater than the pressure in a pressure cooker.

(snip)

why, why, why? can't we use even HALF the time, money and effort as humans to find answers to global climate change and enlightenment instead of killing eachother?

6. When I was in the Navy stationed in Japan I went to the Peace Park
in Hiroshima. I wanted to go, so took the train and busses. Didn't speak the language, but all the kids in blue uniforms took english lessons and would often ask me if they could "practice english". I would just hold my wallet open and let them take what ever the amount was needed for fare on the train or bus. After I had walked through the park, someone came up and asked if they could "practice english". They led me through the park again, and translated what was written in Japanese into english. He said the english translation printed there was for Americans who didn't know Japanese. There is a sculpture of two hands, wrists together, palms flat and fingers up that has a flame which is to burn until all nuclear weapons are destroyed. I also recall the sculpture to the "atomic children" decorated with paper cranes. Walking through the museum and seeing the shadows on the pavement that was all that was left of people, a very sobering experience. I got out of the Navy not long after that. I was able to see the Worlds Fair in Osaka while there too. 1970 was the year. I was just astonished at how well I was treated by the people in Japan.

8. Tragic.
As much as I agree with the decision to use the weapons doesn't mean I ever want them used again.

I hope they never leave the silos or bomber bays again.
