Want a free burro?
Pesky burros to be shooed away from desert Army base

FORT IRWIN, Calif. (AP) — Federal officials say as many as 100 wild burros will be rounded up in the Mojave Desert next month and put up for adoption because they keep invading the Fort Irwin Army base.
The Bureau of Land Management says the donkeys are attracted by natural springs of water in the area.

A fort official says training is halted each time the burros roam through live-fire areas.

They also affect the habitat of the threatened desert tortoise.

The BLM plans to remove the donkeys beginning in late August. There have been two previous roundups. The BLM says burros are popular, so finding homes for them should be no problem.

I wouldn't recommend them as a food -- I suspect the meat would be rather tough and stringy. ;-)

I just printed this out for my Nice and Nephew in law. This new pet could keep the laws mowed, make the dogs tow the line, and be hours of fun for their three boys (Grand-Nephews).

25. They're actually supposed to taste good -- so says Andrew Zimmern
He ate donkey meat in China and says it was one of the tastiest meats he's ever eaten.

That said, I'd never eat a donkey. They're too cute and adorable.

but you can't beat a free burro, even though it's likely to be a project to tame one down.

18. When I was a kid the neighbors had a burro named Daisy. After school
we used to go to her corral to ride her. She was about pony sized. She tolerated about an hour of kids riding her and then let us know when she was done by nipping the last rider's heels and if that wasn't enough of a hint, she kicked up her rear legs telling the kids riding time was over for the day. They really are cute and probably could make a good law mower without the heavy hooves of horses or cattle.

26. Burros usually hate canines. Their natural enemies in the wild.
I'd worry about the dog's well-being, since donkeys can easily kill a dog.

I once saw a miniature donkey escape, chase down, and kill a ranch dog. For fun.

I couldn't get there in time.

20. Anybody ever been to Oatman, AZ?
It's an old mining town in northern AZ just off old Rt 66.

Many years ago the miners set the burros free in the mountains around the settlement of Oatman when the mines ran out. The burros survived and breed and now come into the town. They are everywhere. I've been there a few times and take carrots to feed the burros. They are so cute, especially the babies. The few people that live there have names for the animals and they are well taken care of.
Check it out if you ever have the chance.

What a strange little town, though. Nothing there but folks selling stuff to people who come to see the burros. Worth a visit, though.

36. I think I m ight like to have one to add to our household of eight rescued cats and one rescue dog.
But we are deed restricted.

My neighbors' daughter had a chicken egg hatch in her hand in her science class. She and her family decided to keep it. Henny Penny adored and was adored by the family. As time went on and adult feathers grew in, it because visually and audibly obvious that Henny Penny was actually Mr. Penny.

Having grown up on farms, my husband and I really enjoyed the crowing. It was nostalgic. Most of the neighbors had no problem with Mr. Penny.

Not so at least one other neighbor. Someone called code enforcement and my were given one week to find a new home for Mr. Penny. They were heartbroken, and Mr. Penny, who went to live with a bunch of other chickens didn't fit in well; he wasn't very happy.

Imagine that same neighbor's reaction to a burro's brays should I try to hide one in my back yard...

28. They are smart...
we had horses, and all we did to keep them in at the road was a cattle guard. Dad brought home a burro and in no time he not only figured out how to cross the cattle guard, but he showed the horses how as well. Dad actually caught him tip toeing back and forth across the grate with the horses standing there watching. We had to put up gates after Manuel came to town.

32. I can barely buy hay for my horses.
A neighbor had his 2 blm adopted burros wander off a couple of years ago. I found them hanging out by the mailboxes. I didn't know whose they were, so I took them home and called several agencies to report them. Just to get the word out, I put an ad in the "found" section of the paper.

The local radio stations had a blast with that one, lol. They are, in the end, the source that led the owner to me to pick them up.

He's a couple miles to the north of me, but the topography and trees guarantee that we never see anyone who doesn't have a fence bordering our property.

Burros can be fun; they are smart. They are also escape artists; much too clever for MY good.

I'll be lucky to manage hay for my horses. In my area, blooded, experienced horses are going cheap, there are horses available for free, and some have been turned loose out on blm because owners can no longer afford to feed them; the local economy is severely depressed. I hope those burros find good homes.
