Breaking! Richardson Scores Nuke Deal with North Korea
Edited on Tue Apr-10-07 02:10 PM by kpete
Richardson’s N. Korea visit yields nuke breakthrough

New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson’s visit to North Korea appears to be yielding unexpected fruit.

Richardson, part of a bipartisan delegation dispatched to North Korea to return remains of U.S. MIAs, appears to have secured a concession from the communist state on its developing nuclear weapons program.

Monday, a North Korean nuclear arms negotiator relayed to Richardson that the country would be willing to allow international U.N. arms inspectors into the country if some $25 million in North Korean money that has been frozen is released.

..................

“What was positive coming out of Pyongyang (the North Korean capitol) yesterday is the report that the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea is prepared to take these actions to get the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) in there, and take these first steps,” said Hill.

The North Koreans also told Richardson that it will be difficult to stop production at the country’s main nuclear reactor by Saturday, a pre-negotiated deadline. A State Department spokesman responded that the U.S. “might not object” to extending the deadline.

9. Yup. Plus, the Koreans are gonna stiff him too when they get the cash
No WAY they are gonna give up their giving tree. That reactor is worth its weight in gold to them, because they constantly use it to keep the world at bay and to bribe and extort those who try to deal with them.

I know you have to talk to them in the real world, but it must be really damn frustrating - like doing diplomacy with Lucy from Peanuts and you're Charlie Brown.

6. A on foreign affairs. A dark horse to watch.
If he doesn't get the nomination, do you want him to stay governor or take a cabinet post like Sec of State?

We have such fabulous candidates. The Republicans have.........whatever those things are.

24. My sentiments exactly
What exactly are they going to do after McCain and Guiliani both melt into puddles? I have racked my brain trying to think of a respectable Republican, and, astonishingly, the da on Law and Order actually DOES seem to be the best they've got!!

What if they just didn't nominate a candidate? Like maybe nobody actually shows up for their convention?

:)

I think this may be our guy for the SOS, wouldn't you say so? He is so very capable in this area, and I think he might be just the right guy to get our foreign policy back on track.

17. First Gore in Europe
Then Pelosi in the ME, now Richardson in NK. The world will be a better place with the dems in charge, it's obvious that republican bellicosity does not make for good international relations of any kind. In fact it just makes enemies who might strike back. GO DEMS!

embarrasing as hell for the white house. I am surprised the state dept went along with the delay on the deadline, though it probably would have looked bad if they had not.

27. All due respect to Gov. Richardson,
and he deserves a great deal, but how sad.

It's disturbing that the Governor of New Mexico, an octogenarian former President (Jimmy Carter), former secretaries of state Zbigniew Brzezinski and Madeline Albright, and the Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi are having to diplomatically represent the U.S. while Chimpy hallucinates, Condi hides, and Deadeye Dick lurks behind the shrub.

I'm glad they are all doing this, but they sure as hell shouldn't have to.

This only proves that the Executive Branch of the United States government is completely dysfunctional when it comes to foreign policy.

30. I really like this guy...
I'm liking Richardson more and more. You know he also signed the medical marijuana bill in his state - AFTER he began running for President. That takes guts, and his international experience was already attractive to me. I'm not surprised that he got something accomplished, he appears to be a very capable man.
