14. Where is Iraq?
The whole thing has to be about the oil. I also think that if Iran got nuclear power then they wouldn't have to burn the oil that they do have to make electricity and they would be free to sell more of the oil they have. That might spoil some balance in the market. So much comes down to jealousy over making money. If the Iranians make more money, then all of our sanctions against that country mean less. I do not see the Iranians going after the Israelis. Seems like the other way around to me. Can we say 'projection?'

23. Oil is cheaper than nuclear. Iran swims in it. Iran also made the comment about wiping Israel off
the map.

Most systems in the world are still geared toward oil.

And Occam's razor.

Also, as Iran has been more belligerent so I can't believe into your rationalization of their claim to use nuclear for peaceful intentions.

25. to interject some reality, this is a common mapmaker mistake: explanation
the artist is making a map, he knows the font style is the same one used for Egypt, so he dupes egypt over every country, and then proceeds to select the typeblock and retype the correct country name. Being in a rush, He/she overlooks that they haven't yet retyped Iraq. Proofers miss it, and it gets on air.

It's a mistake, but not one of stupidity but bad proofreading.

I made maps for a newspaper for 20 years, and this particular error is very easy to make. It doesn't mean the mapmaker is stupid, just under the deadline gun and not as thorough as necessary.

28. That would make sense if Egypt was actually marked.
But it isn't.

I don't disagree with the explanation in general, it just doesn't seem to work (without extra mental gymnastics) for this error.

39. actually, it still makes sense.
have you ever made a map? I've made thousands. The decision which country to name is not always made at the beginning. In the beginning, he might have labeled EVERY country and the editor told him, no, just label those closest to what's going on. Then the artist deletes the unneeded names.

I stand by what I said, its a common error for mapmakers.

40. I wasn't suggesting you didn't know your craft -
that extra bit of defensiveness was really unnecessary.

You obviously feel very strongly about this. Rather surprising to me, as I never realized mapmakers were such a tight knit guild.

And no, I've never made a map. I have read thousands - new and old - in my field (historian). Can't say I've ever noticed this sort of error, save on much older maps, but then I can't say I was looking for mistakes, either.

42. don't know how calmly explaining something to you is labeled "defensive"
Nor why you have to interject emotionality and condescension (?)

at any rate, I was just sharing what could have happened in this case, from professional experience as a graphic journalist. I noticed a lot of people in this thread were only jumping to a singular conclusion and I was offering an alternative conclusion that many might not have known about.

As a historian, you are viewing maps that had plenty of time to be proofread. IN the news business, there is often not a lot of time before something needs to be put on the air or on the press. Therefore your past experience, while impressive, is not germaine to this particular instance, except for a way to puff up your own chest, I suppose.

It's a "News" channel. They are supposed to check things before they go out over the air. I don't see how a convoluted excuse about fonts has any bearing on the sloppiness displayed here.
