CLEVELAND — Benita Pearson, a former federal prosecutor and current federal magistrate judge, has been recommended for a seat on the U.S. District Court in Youngstown.
Pearson, 46, would become the first African-American woman to hold a U.S. District judgeship in Ohio. She must be nominated by President Barack Obama and confirmed by the U.S. Senate.
Pearson has been recommended by Ohio's two senators to take over for U.S. District Judge Peter Economus, who is taking "senior status" -- an option on the federal bench that allows older judges to continue hearing cases on a limited basis.
U.S. Sens. Sherrod Brown, a Democrat, and George V. Voinovich, a Republican released a statement today announcing their recommendation.
