Did Pat Buchanan object to Clarence Thomas?
Clarence Thomas was an affirmative action student and had far less experience on the bench than Sotomayor. I suspect Buchanan is willing to overlook race as long as the judge rules according to RW ideology - like Thomas does. COmpared to Sotomayor, Thomas was a true lightweight in terms of depth of experience and scholarly accomplishments.

Is Buchanan opposed to 'legacy' admissions? Like what enable Bush to get into Yale? Was there a minority student who had better grades and test scores who was denied to give a place to the C student Bush?

I think Buchanan is more than willing to turn a blind eye to the race of a person as long as he or she falls into the approved ideology of the RW. If he/she doesn't then any success that person may achieve is all do to that nasty affirmative action and the accomplshments are therefore suspect.

Buchanan is a hypocrite in more ways than one.

racist like Pat. Thomas has not had an original thought or question since being on the bench. He defers to Alito almost 100% of the time. The few times he speaks he should have kept his mouth shut. Thomas is an embarrassment to the Supreme Court.

2. I think it was a "grudging" affirmation of Thomas...
Pat can not totally leave his racism (and misogyny) behind... After all, he has been a lifelong defender of Nixon, who had quite the reputation for racism (antisemitism, and sexism) himself.

Perhaps someone remembers specifically?

6. ... and happens to
agree with Pat on issues.

I think for Pat, he can reconcile Affirmative Action if it yields acceptable results - conservative water carriers for the white males point of view. That's okay as far as he's concerned. It's as though that should be the natural outcome of Affirmative Action.

Now if you are a person who benefits from Affirmative Action and stray from the conservative party line then you are just ungrateful and unworthy of the gifts you were given.

And by the way, you took some whate guy's slot. You ungrateful __________ (fill in the blank)

10. Clarence Thomas IMO is an Uncle Tom and therefore is not seen as a ...
... threat to the white male establishment.

11. Eugene Robinson really dropped the ball the other day, when he let
Buchanan get away with calling Sotomayor an unqualified, affirmative action beneficiary.

as I watched that exchange, the very first thing that popped into my head was Thomas. I'd like to know why he didn't bring up that name...it was so obvious

Robinson doesn't do particularly well in those sorts of situations, though, I've noticed

12. GW Bush
was a legacy beneficiary, which I kind of look at aa affirmative action for undermotivated or not too bright rich white kids.

For all the attack that are leveled at minorities who are given some extra consideration, little seems to be said about legacy admissions.
