DU Please Please Get This Book and Read It. "The Eliminationists" by David Neiwert
The subtitle is "How Hate Talk Radicalized the American Right"

Finally. Somebody is articulating with excellent detail in one handy tome the biggest problem with America right now.

This book should be recommended by all of us. Very important piece of work.

And as an added bonus, reading this book will open your eyes to understanding DU better as well.

3. He articulates how the extreme radical right wing views
are transmitted to the public by hate radio, pundits, politicians, etc. and made to appear mainstream instead of the crap that it is. He calls the far right eliminationists because their solution to every problem is to not debate with anyone, but to eliminate them. The ugly discourse that they persist in is truly beyond the pale for public discourse, but by doing it, they make it seem acceptable, and pretty soon even what we think are "liberal" media wind up touting the same views. That's why I say it helps you to kind of understand DU. That stuff sinks all the way through you know. Bleeds all the way through until even liberals spout some of it. He doesn't say that in his book mind you, but this is what I began to see as a result of reading it.

He talks about Free Republic and Freepers, etc.

5. Thanks for the link. The first I heard of him was getting
his book.

I hope this thread stays kicked for a while. We need to buy some "bestsellers" to get the other side out.

11. Got it in one.
Not so technical as the "ignore" button here, but it served better I think.

But, "it was a simpler time." Before our political house was set ablaze.

9. Link to preview via google books -

Drawing from his extensive reporting on right-wing groups, David Neiwert argues that the conservative movements alliances with far-right extremists have not only pushed the movements agenda to the right, but have become a malignant influence thats increasingly reflected in political discourse. The result is a pathology Neiwert calls pseudo-fascisma political style that talks and acts like fascism without its core violence and thuggishness. The author argues that only effective response is a rhetoric of peace and not a surrendering one, but the kind of peace that stands up for human values, civil discourse, and basic decency.

10. You won't want to put it down once you start reading it.
I think it dovetails nicely with David Brook's "Blinded By The Right".
