Chocolate Jesus Charlatan Lampooned on South Park
Posted by Evan Derkacz at 9:57 AM on April 5, 2007.

Right-wing Catholic demagogue Bill Donohue gets spoofed for his allegiance to the GOP.

The South Park boys pit a power hungry Bill Donohue against Jesus against the backdrop of Stan's attempt to understand just what a Bunny has to do with the risen Christ.

As both Julia and Pastordan note, Bill Donohue is way too busy moralizing about a Chocolate Jesus sculpture to worry about a Republican presidential candidate's abortion stance or pecadillo-happy past, despite his vociferous denunciations of John Kerry before the 2004 elections.

It seems his adherence to the Republican Party line is a bit sturdier than his adherence to the Catholic Church -- let alone to the ideals of Jesus. Something the South Park boys get right in the episode excerpted here (part 3, the denouement, in which Donohue and Jesus face off, will be available shortly).

Noting that Donohue has called said boys "whores and cowards," the Orlando Sentinel quotes the Catholic League's response to the episode excerpted here:

On last night’s episode of the Comedy Central show "South Park," Catholic League president Bill Donohue appeared as one of the cartoon characters, along with a figure of Pope Benedict XVI. The Easter script depicted Donohue chastising the pope for being "too soft." Donohue then takes over as pope. When a Jesus figure appears, he has both the pope and Jesus arrested. After Jesus is killed by Kyle, he resurrects and kills Donohue.

Donohue commented on this today:

"I have no idea why 'South Park' creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker caricature me as a heartless thug. In any event, I stand convicted and have no defense. Now I have to get back to business—I hear someone just took some liberties with the Easter Bunny."

1. Ouch, When rabid RW fundies try to be funny, it's painful. Donohue should acutally watch
the episode. He may not chuckle as much about it. MKJ

6. So He Said...
I  just like you did when I heard it...but if you think about it, I could see how this would be viewed positive on Planet Donohue.

His thing was he was "defending" the pope and the Easter Bunny in the episode and somehow this makes his a "hero" and portrayed positively.

Beam me up.

:hi:

9. Hippitus Hoppitus Deus Domine
I'd become disenchanted with Parker & Stone in recent years, since I saw them ridiculing 'my' side with far more regularity than 'their' side. My only exposure to SP became limited to times when my adolescent son watched episodes while I was on the computer in the family room. The merciless treatment of 'Hollywood liberals' and environmentalists began grating on my nerves. It occurred to me during the episode that ripped on Scientology, however, that these guys were attempting to prove they could be equal-opportunity satirists. Later that season I got drawn in to the episode ragging on the very foundations of Mormon theology. At that moment it felt as though Lex Luthor had abandoned his evil intentions and decided to use his genius for good!

This past week I saw the clips of Bill Donohue lambasting Cosimo Cavallaro over his chocolate Jesus and coming across as a fascist shitweasel. When I heard that SP was going to lampoon Donohue, I was stoked! I thought the episode was brilliant, and it was made all the sweeter when Donohue felt compelled to issue a rebuttal (lame as it was).
