They are selling 84-year-old Irene Leary's home out from under her today. Can you help? (from ACORN)
Irene Leary, who will lose her home today.

Dear xxxxxx,

I love my mom. Her name is Irene. She's 84-years-old, and she is the most important person in the world to me.

Today, her bank is selling the house she has lived in for 34 years, and it's breaking my heart.

The unbelievable part of it is that OneWest -- the bank -- doesn't even have to talk with my mom before selling her house right out from under her. That's because OneWest is among four big mortgage service companies that haven't signed on to President Obama's program to help stop foreclosures. It's the "Making Home Affordable" plan, and even though OneWest is the recipient of federal bailout money, they are still taking my mom's home away today.

Will you sign a letter to the CEO of OneWest before they sell my mother's home today? http://salsa.wiredforchange.com/o/2749/t/4433/campaign.jsp?campaign_KEY=2825">Click here. ACORN is sending copies of the letter to the CEOs of the other three banks whose mortgage servicing companies won't sign on to the Making Home Affordable plan (Litton of Goldman Sachs, HomEq of Barclays, and American Home Mortgage Servicing Inc, along with OneWest), because my mom isn't the only one who needs help right now.

But don't misunderstand me: my mother will lose her home today unless we can convince OneWest not to sell her house. Please help her. Sign the letter now. http://salsa.wiredforchange.com/o/2749/t/4433/campaign.jsp?campaign_KEY=2825">Click here.

I asked my mom to tell me about how she got into this situation -- she's been the same house for 34 years, after all. How did this happen?

Here's what my mom told me:

Your father was receiving dialysis three times a week and suffering from chronic, congestive heart failure. He was vulnerable and realized he was on the verge of passing. He was worried that he'd leave me with $30,000 to $40,000 in credit card debt. With those concerns, we sought advice.

OneWest advised us we would qualify for a loan based on our credit scores and the loan would "solve our problems." They definitely preyed upon our vulnerability.

Your father died a month after we received the loan. Our fixed income was $2,388.81 per month. With his passing, the income dropped to $1,600.00 per month. I continued to make payments, but they kept going up and up. They went up so much that even if my husband was still alive, we could not have made them.

That's how we got where we are: Today, OneWest is selling my mom's house out from under her unless we stop them. Please, please http://salsa.wiredforchange.com/o/2749/t/4433/campaign.jsp?campaign_KEY=2825">click here to send a letter to the CEO of OneWest.

From the bottom of my heart, and on behalf of the most wonderful woman in the whole world, my mother, Irene Leary, thank you for taking action today.

Sincerely,

Dennis Leary
Proud Son of Irene Leary

1. This isn't Dennis Leary of TV fame, isn't it? If so, he can write a check.
I feel for this woman, but I'm not signing any petition. It will not help this woman, and if you go to the link, the body of the pre-written email doesn't even suggest that the action will help this woman. It simply asks the mortgage company to get with Obama's program, so people "like" this woman won't get fucked over.

The link says they are SELLING her home today. Not taking it. It's done.

That's how people get your name, your email address, and dun you for donations for the rest of your live-long life.

Individuals may want to write to that mortgage company via email, or call and complain about their practices.

But putting your name on an email list is not going to help this lady. If they're selling today, they've already foreclosed, and she's fucked.

I don't like deceptive practices. Using a little old lady with a suggestion that simply signing the petiton (how easy! I've done my good deed for the day!) will save her home is as bad as dangling a puppy or a kitty in front of folks to get money for a cause unrelated to animal shelters. ACORN would have been better off stating their case honestly, instead of forcing people to dig through a pile of crap to get the real story. I'm not impressed by the tactic.

I wonder if this same appeal will be up on the net tomorrow, dated the 30th? Yes, I am cynical, but someone's gotta be.

I think this is the bank's website, with the eight hundred number up in the corner.... http://www.owb.com/singlecontent.aspx?id=1372

5. Not all entertainers are made of money
It shouldn't matter who her son is. This is just wrong on several levels.

4. There is something about this
that feels like a scam. I did check Snopes, but they don't have it.

If they'd been in the home 34 years, wouldn't a thirty year mortgage have been paid off by now? Couldn't they have gotten a reverse mortgage?

This just doesn't smell right.

6. if the bank talked them into a Re-Fi, at a variable rate, that would explain it.
But..still does not explain the so called story.
If the son can write about a house sale going on TODAY, where was he when the parents were
walking into the shark's mouth?
FYI...a Re-finance loan means the bank can take EVERYTHING, not just the house.

12. came in my email - from ACORN....but let me know if you find it's a scam
I figure it is a way to get people to try to push the banksters onto Obama's plan.

If it's off-putting then by all means ignore, cuss, rage, and refuse to sign - as DUers are wont to do when they don't like the smell of something (myself included).
